The Utes to compete at the Trojan Invitational.
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's track and field team begins the 2018 outdoor season at the Trojan Invitational this Friday and Saturday, March 16-17. The two-day meet will take place at the Cromwell Field and Loker Stadium in Los Angeles, Cali.
"It will be a good quick trip to get the season started and kind of get our feet wet," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "I know we have a bunch of kids who haven't raced for about three weeks and they are excited to get back going again. It should be a good meet to get things going. Last time we went it was a well-run meet, they did an outstanding job, so we're going to go back and hopefully have another similar set of performances because I know we ran and competed very well the last time we were there."
The Utes will be sending a large group of runners competing in a wide variety of events.
In the sprints, seniors Alissa Atisme and Raynee Helm Wheelock will make their return to the track this weekend. Atisme holds the school record in the outdoor 100 and 200-meter events along with ranking third in the 400 at Utah. Wheelock ranks seventh all-time at Utah in the 100-meter event and improved several of her times during the indoor season. Freshman Jackie Martin had strong 200 times in her first indoor season and Brooke Martin is in her second season with the Utes.
Seniors Hannah McInturff, Jessica Sams and sophomore Poppy Tank all rank in the top 10 at Utah in the 5,000-meter event. Freshman Bella Williams is entering her first outdoor season, she entered the top 10 all-time at Utah in the 3,000 in indoor, while senior Louise Mercer ran a strong 5,000 race at the MPSF Championships. Other distance runners competing this weekend include freshman Trina Moreno and freshman Aubrey Argyle. Moreno has had several strong performances during her freshman season in championship events.
Sophomore Ashley Licata ranks sixth all-time at Utah in the 3,000 steeplechase.
Several short to middle distance runners will compete, including Grace Englund, Caitlin Faust, Dakota Grossman, Nicole Griffiths, Whitney Hessler, Sarah Newton, Mesa Weidle, Melissa Taggart and Megan Perkins. Faust ranks 10th all-time at Utah in the 800 while Englund and Newton are ranked in the indoor event. Englund also ranks in the top 10 in the indoor 400.
Senior Madison Lanford and freshman Rachel Whipple will be compete in the 400-meter hurdles. Freshman Regan Crofts will also be competing for the first time this year making her collegiate debut in the javelin and Eliza Hansen will compete in the high jump.
"We'll probably run a lot of kids in off events and not their primary events," Kepler explained. "We kind of want to see where we are at and test the waters again after a really big training block these last three weeks or so."
