Utah rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the top of the ninth. The Utes loaded the bases after Davis Delorefice and Shea Kramer singled and Erick Migueles was hit by a pitch with one out. Oliver Dunn was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run of the inning and Matt Richardson singled to bring in a second run before Rykker Tom had the big hit of the inning with a two-RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.
Solid defense from Braden DeBenedictis helped get the Utes out of the bottom of the ninth and push the game into extra innings. Although Utah put two runners on in the top of the 10th with the help of a single and an error, a strikeout got BYU out of the inning. In the bottom of the 10th, a leadoff single would come around to score the game-winning run with the help of a passed ball and a wild pitch.
Tom led Utah at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, including a solo home run with three RBI. Richardson and Migueles also each had two hits.
Utah used five pitchers with starter Jacob Rebar throwing 1 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Justin Kelly allowed one run with five hits and three strikeouts over three innings. Austin Moore threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run and one hit, while Spencer Kevin Johnson pitched 1 1/3 innings and did not allow a hit. Trenton Stoltz allowed one run and one hit in the final 1 1/3 innings in the loss.
BYU took a 4-0 lead in the second inning off of five hits, which included a two-RBI triple.
Utah got on the board in the third inning with two runs to cut the lead in half, 4-2. Dunn and Richardson both singled and Dunn scored on a ground out. Tom hit his first home run of the season to add another run to the Utes tally.
BYU added solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings to extend its lead to 6-2 before the Ute comeback in the ninth.
The game is part of the Deseret First Duel rivalry series, with the overall winner of the four baseball games between Utah and BYU earning three total points.
Utah (2-17) begins an eight-game home stand on Friday, March 23, against Sacramento State at 6:00 p.m. MT.
