SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis team defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs earlier today at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center with a final score of 6-1. With this win, the Utes move to an overall record of 9-7 on the season.
"Even though Fresno State is not ranked, it's still a good win," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "They're probably one of the teams that could win the Mountain West Conference. This win shows the evolution of our team and that we were able to win this match rather handily, I hope it becomes a catalyst as we move forward into some Pac-12 play on the road next week."
The Utes were able to take the early advantage by taking the doubles point over the Bulldogs. On court No. 2, the pair of Taylor Calton and Whitney Turley were able to record a victory against Katerina Stloukalova and Ndindi Ndunda with a final score of 6-3. Brianna Chisholm and Victoria Robertson then sealed the point at the No. 3 position over Olivia Noble and Juliane Triebe, finishing with a score of 7-5.
In singles, Chisholm kept things rolling by earning the first victory for the Utes at the No. 2 spot, topping Katerina Stloukalova 6-3, 6-4. Robertson shortly followed with a win of her own, defeating Georgia Lawson on the No. 6 court with a final score of 6-1, 6-4. Then to seal the win for the Utes over Fresno State, Turley finished off Alessia Dario with a score of 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 5 position. Jena Cheng also added another victory for the Utes at the No. 5 spot, defeating Ndindi Ndunda in a competitive match, scoring 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Alexia Petrovic recorded the final win of the day for the Utes, defeating Emma Wilson in three sets with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 7-6, at the No. 1 position.
The Utah women's tennis team will be back in action next week for two Pac-12 conference matches. The Utes will be making a road trip up to Washington to take on Washington State University on Friday, March 30th, followed by a match against the University of Washington on Sunday, April 1st.
