SALT LAKE CITY – DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., led Utah baseball with two hits as the Utes dropped a midweek game to UNLV, 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Utes had five hits total in the contest with
Oliver Dunn,
Davis Delorefice and
Dominic Foscalina all recording hits for Utah in addition to Keirsey's two hits.
Riley Pierce earned the start for the Utes on the mound, allowing one unearned run and four hits over three innings in the loss.
Josh Lapiana pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Trenton Stoltz struck out the lone batter he faced and
Jacob Rebar pitched the final inning.
UNLV took a 1-0 lead with the help of two errors in the second inning. A solo home run in the fourth gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead and UNLV capped off its scoring in the fifth after a one-out walk came around to score on an RBI double.
The Utes attempted a squeeze play in the third inning that was unsuccessful, stranding two runners on base. Utah loaded the bases in the fifth with one out after Foscalina singled, Chris Rowan was hit by a pitch and Dunn walked but a double play got UNLV out of the inning. The Utes also left two runners on base in the seventh.
Utah continues its home stand this weekend, hosting No. 1 ranked Oregon State beginning on Thursday, March 28, at 6:00 p.m. MT.
