Utes complete day one at Stanford, SF State, and Utah Valley Invites.
PALO ALTO, Calif., SAN FRANCISCO, and OREM, Utah –Senior Grayson Murphy led the Utah track and field team with a third-place finish and a new school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase invitational race on Friday evening at the Stanford Invitational, leading Utes at the Stanford, San Francisco State, and Utah Valley Invites Friday evening.
"Murphy ran an awesome race," Kepler said. "We were just making sure we got an NCAA qualifying type mark and she ran right there with the defending NCAA champion, who got away from her in the last 600-meters, but she ran right with the leaders for the whole race."
Murphy recorded a new personal best and lowered her previous school record with a time of 9:51.36. This tops her previous record by two seconds.
In the 400-meter dash, senior Alissa Atisme finished in 10th place with a time of 55.49. Finishing behind Atisme was freshman Jackie Martin who crossed the line in 17th place with a personal-best time of 56.57. In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Madison Lanford placed 25th with a time of 64.26 while freshman Ruby Jane Mathewson finished in 26th with a time of 64.46. With this time, Mathewson earned a new personal record.
Eliza Hansen finished fourth in the collegiate high jump with a height of 5'5.0" (1.65m). This height is a new personal best for Hansen.
At the San Francisco State Invite, senior Louise Mercer led for the Utes with a sixth-place finish in 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:00.37. Coming in behind Mercer was sophomore Poppy Tank and senior Jessica Sams. Tank finished in 11th place with a time of 17:04.81 while Sams placed 16th with a time of 17:12.74. Also competing for the Utes was freshman Aubrey Argyle (39th, 17:33.05), redshirt freshman Trina Moreno (44th, 17:38.06), and senior Shaylen Crook (60th, 17:54.61).
In the 1,500-meter race, senior Hannah McInturff finished in seventh place with a time of 4:30.82. Following McInturff was sophomore Nicole Griffiths, Megan Perkins-Killian, and freshman Bella Williams. Griffiths placed 23rd with a time of 4:34.77, Perkins-Killian finished 25th with a time of 4:34.99, and Williams earned 29th with a time of 4:37.16. With these times, Griffiths and Perkins-Killian recorded new personal bests. Finishing behind Williams was junior Sadie Wassum (41st, 4:40.92), sophomore Melissa Taggart (45th, 4:41.10), and sophomore Ashley Licata (98th, 4:56.79). With this time, Licata earned a new personal record.
Junior Jade Mulvey led the way for the Utes in the 10,000-meter race with a 30th-place finish and a time of 37:46.76. Junior Hannah Allred finished in 39th place with a time of 38:44.97. With this time Mulvey recorded a new personal record.
Senior Dakota Grossman competed in her first 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday and finished in 31st place with a time of 11:14.50. Grossman also finished first in her preliminary section. This time moves her into 10th place all-time at Utah.
Down in Orem, sophomore Emma Christensen highlighted the first day for the Utes with a seventh-place finish in the 3,000-meter race. Christensen finished with a time of 10:46.27. Following behind Christensen was freshman Astrid Lindgren who placed eighth with a time of 11:04.48.
In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Rachel Whipple placed 10th with a time of 1:05.29 while sophomore Brooke Martin finished in 16th with a time of 1:08.87. Senior Mesa Weidle competed in the 800-meter race where she finished in eighth with a time of 2:24.07.
Junior Lauren McCluskey closed things out for the Utes in the high jump where she placed 18th with a height of 5'1.75" (1.57m).
"Very very pleased, we are really making progress and I am really proud of my staff," Kepler explained. "The kids are really believing in each other and were just having a lot of fun, we are really enjoying what we are doing, and getting a lot of success."
