
Utah Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Santa Clara

Utah (0-10) out-hit Santa Clara in game one, 11-7, but struggled with runners left on base, stranding 14 throughout the game. Rykker Tom went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Shea Kramer and Matt Richardson had two hits each. Kramer also had an RBI. On the mound, Tanner Thomas pitched five innings in the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Jacob Rebar pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run and one hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Spencer Kevin Johnson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking two.
The Utes couldn't hold two late leads in game two. Utah led 4-1 in the seventh inning before Santa Clara tied the game at 4-4 with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. In the 12th inning, Utah scored a run in the top of the inning to take the lead before Santa Clara hit a two-out bases-loaded single for two runs and the win. Dominic Foscalina had two hits and drove in three runs, including a two-run home run, to lead Utah at the plate. Tom and Richardson each had a pair of hits and Kramer and Tom each drove in a run. On the mound, Brett Brocoff pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Joshua Tedeschi pitched 6 1/3 innings in relief in the loss with a career-high 10 strikeouts. He allowed five runs on seven hits with a walk.
Utah travels to San Jose State on Monday, March 5, for a single game beginning at 1:00 p.m. PT.
Game 1
Utah left runners on base in the first and second innings before breaking through in the fourth for the first lead of the game. Chander Anderson was hit by a pitch and stole second, scoring on an RBI single from Kramer. Utah loaded the bases with one out before Santa Clara got a double play to end the Ute threat.
Santa Clara tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. A hit batter led to a run on an RBI double. A hit batter and walk loaded the bases before the Utes got a ground out, leaving the score tied at 1-1. Santa Clara broke the tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits for a 3-1 lead.
Each team scored a run in the seventh. Utah cut the Santa Clara lead to 3-2 after walks to Oliver Dunn and Wade Gulden set up an RBI double by Tom. A leadoff walk to the Broncos led to their run on an RBI single, pushing the advantage back to two runs, 4-2.
In the ninth inning, Tom beat out an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. An error on a ground ball allowed Tom to score and cut the lead to a run, 4-3. Kramer singled to put two on base before a strikeout ended the game and the Rally.
Game 2
Utah took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Dunn reached on an error to lead off the game and scored on Tom's RBI single to center field.
Santa Clara got on the board in the third, tying the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly following a walk and a single.
The Utes went up 3-1 in the fifth inning with Foscalina hitting a two-run home run, his first of the year. Utah increased its lead to 4-1 in the seventh, again with the bat of Foscalina hitting an RBI double after a leadoff walk.
Utah got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth, forcing the Broncos into leaving the bases loaded, before Santa Clara came back to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh with three runs. A leadoff single and hit batter led to a two-RBI triple, with the game-tying run scoring on a wild pitch.
Santa Clara had runners in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the 10th before an infield pop up and ground out got the Utes out of the inning.
Utah took the lead in the 12th inning. Tom hit a leadoff single to center field and advanced to second on a throwing error on a bunt. A bunt moved both runners into scoring position, leading to Tom scoring on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the 12th, Santa Clara hit a pair of singles to put runners in scoring position with one out. The Utes walked a hitter to load the bases and set up a double play. Although Tedeschi got a strikeout for the second out of the inning, a single scored two runs and lifted the Broncos to the win.
