COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Senior
Grayson Murphy earned her fourth All-America honor at Utah with a 10th-place finish in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday evening.Â
"I'm just really impressed with the effort and the approach, especially not having a race since December second," Utah Head coach
Kyle Kepler explained. "To not have raced all year and to come here and finish 10th in the country is pretty amazing and it says a lot about that talent and perseverance that she has."
Murphy finished the race with a time of 16.10.26, returning to racing for the first time since early December. Murphy was one of two members of the Pac-12 to place in the top 10. She improved five places from her 2017 finish in this event, placing 15th last year.
"We're just super-duper proud of her and excited for her," Kepler said. "It was a real gutty race and I don't think she really ever felt that comfortable, probably a little bit rusty from not racing since December, but she just kept plugging away and ran it lap by lap and just did a terrific job."
In addition to All-America honors in the indoor 5,000 the past two seasons, Murphy is also an All-American in the outdoor 3,000 steeplechase (2017) and cross country (2018). She is one of just five Utes who have earned All-America honors in indoor track and field, joining Traci Olsen-Stevens (1992, high jump), Katie Decker (2004, high jump), Langley Iverson (2011, high jump), and Amanda Mergaert (2013, mile).Â
Murphy is in her second season at Utah after transferring from Santa Clara. A Salt Lake City native who attended West High School, she originally began her collegiate career as a soccer player at Sweet Briar College in 2013. Murphy is a civil engineering major who has earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors in both track and cross country.
Utah now looks forward to its 2018 outdoor track and field season, beginning next week at the Trojan Invitational. The meet will take place Saturday, Mar. 15, in Los Angeles, Calif.
