TEMPE, Ariz. – The Utah men's golf team opened the first day of action at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Saturday, finishing the day in ninth place following the first and second rounds at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
Utah notched 6-over par (290) during the first 18-holes of play, but shot eight strokes better during the second round of play after recording 2-under par (282). The Utes head into Sunday's final round with a combined score of 4-over par (290-282=572) on the par-71, 7,032-yard course.
"We were sloppy today," said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "We had some great moments, but we have to limit our mistakes. We made a lot of mistakes today. We had a good comeback in the afternoon and are in good position to have a solid tournament. We have 18 holes tomorrow to get it done."
Leading the 17-team field following 36 holes of play, No. 25 Arizona State and No. 27 UNLV are tied for first place with a combined score of 18-under par. No. 3 Oklahoma (-15) is in third place, while No. 11 Baylor (-11) and No. 32 Arizona (-6) round out the top-five teams in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Freshman
Blake Tomlinson registered two rounds at par or better on Saturday, carding a first-round even par (71) and a second-round 1-under par (70). Tomlinson currently sits in a tie for 20
th place with a combined score of 1-under par.
Sophomore
Jordan Costello currently sits in a tie for 28
th place with a combined score of 1-over par. Costello shot 3-over par (74) in the first round, but would go on to record 2-under par (69) in the second round. Costello's round of 69 marks the sophomore's second round in the 60's on the season.
Sophomore
Mitchell Schow registered a first round score of 2-over par (73) and followed with a second-round even par (71). Schow sits in a tie for 37
th place at a combined score of 2-over par.
"Blake played solid for us today and Jordan had a nice second round. Mitchell played solidly for us with his time back in the line-up after missing the last few tournaments. We are looking forward to getting out there tomorrow," said Clegg.
Junior
Kyler Dunkle sits in a tie for 44
th place with a combined score of 3-over par. Dunke notched rounds of 2-over par (73) and 1-over par (72) on Saturday. Rounding out Utah's five-man team, freshman
Tristan Mandur is currently in a tie for 69
th place with a combined score of 8-over par. Mandur carded 2-over par (73) in the first round and 6-over par (77) in the second round.
Also making the trip to the desert, three Utes competed in the ASU Thunderbird Individual tournament on Saturday. The individual event is taking place at the Papago Golf Course (par-71/7,316 yards) in Phoenix, Ariz.
Freshman
Andrew Crockett and junior
Nathan Wunderli sit in a tie for 25
th place after both golfers posted combined rounds of 9-over par. Crockett registered rounds of 1-over par (72) and 8-over par (79), while Wunderli carded rounds of 5-over par (76) and 4-over par (75). Sophomore
Peyton Hastings sits in a tie for 28
th overall with a combined score of 10-over par. Hastings recorded 7-over par (78) in the first round and 3-over par (74) in the second round.
The Utes will close out action at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Sunday morning, beginning with tee times of the No. 1 and No. 10 holes at 7 a.m. MT. Live scoring for both the team and individual events are available via GolfStat.com.
