TEMPE, Ariz. – The Utah men's golf team wrapped up regular season action on Sunday, finishing in eighth place in the 17-team field at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, which is being held at the par-71, 7,032-yard Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
Utah carded even par (282) in the final round of play to finish with a 54-hole score of 4-over par (290-282-284=856).
"Overall, this was a good tournament for our team," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "I felt like we played really well today. It was one of our best final rounds all year. We only moved up the team leaderboard one spot, but that doesn't completely tell the story."
No. 25 Arizona State (-22) took home the team title after narrowly edging out No. 27 UNLV (-21) who would go on to finish in second place. No. 3 Oklahoma (-19) finished in third place, No. 1 Oklahoma State (-17) followed in fourth, and Arizona (-14) placed fifth.
Freshman
Blake Tomlinson notched another round below par, registering a third-round 1-under par (70). Tomlinson finished the event in a tie for 15
thplace with a combined score of 2-under par (71-70-70=211). Tomlinson has now recorded seven top-20 finishes in the 10 events he has competed in.
"Blake had a great tournament and has been either the first or second finisher on our team in all of the spring tournaments," Clegg said. "Tristan came through with an exceptional final round of 69."
Junior
Kyler Dunkle posted his best round of the tournament on Sunday after registering a round of even par (71). Dunkle finished in a tie for 34
thoverall with a combined score of 3-over par (73-72-71=216).
Sophomore
Mitchell Schow carded 3-over par (74) in the third round of play to finish in a tie for 43
rdplace in his return to the Utah line-up. Schow finished with a 54-hole score of 5-over par (73-71-74=218).
Freshman
Tristan Mandur and sophomore
Jordan Costello rounded out the Utes on Sunday in the team event, where Mandur and Costello finished in a tie for 46
thplace with scores of 6-over par. Mandur (73-77-69=219) carded 2-under par in the final round, while Costello (74-69-76=219) shot 5-over par in the final round.
"I'm really encouraged by the way we played this week and feel like we are in a great place heading into the conference championship next week," said Clegg.
Competing at the ASU Thunderbird Individual tournament, junior
Nathan Wunderli finished in 28
thplace with a combined score of 13-over par (76-75-75=266) at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz.
Freshman
Andrew Crockett finished the event in a tie for 29
thwith a 54-hole score of 14-over par (72-79-76=227). Sophomore
Peyton Hastings placed in a tie for 31
stplace with a combined score of 15-over par (78-74-76=228).
Utah will head to the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships next Monday through Wednesday, April 23-25. The three-day conference tournament will be held at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Los Angeles.
