Utah Golf Ties for Second Place in Match Play

Utes wrapped up their time at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup

FRISCO, Texas– Utah tied for second place at the end of the match play round of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup to put a bow on its first tournament of the 2026-27 season.

The Utes went toe-to-toe with Rice, splitting their match 2.5-2.5. Texas came in first after going 4-1 with Texas A&M, leaving the Aggies to bring up the rear. Utah took fourth place during the final day of stroke play on Tuesday, with senior Gabriel Palacios tying for sixth place.

"We would have liked to come out a little stronger to start our season," head coach Garrett Clegg said. "Gabriel was a bright spot this week, playing well in stroke and match play. Jack was solid in his match play as well. We learned a lot about ourselves this week that we will hopefully use to make ourselves better in the weeks to come."

Match play is unlike the traditional stroke play that Utah will play most of the season. (Utah has one more match play event lined up in the middle of October when the Big 12 comes to town for its event at The Country Club at Salt Lake City.)

Five golfers from each team compete head-to-head with opponents for the entirety of the course. The golfer who posts a lower score on each hole wins that matchup.

Golfers can lead by more holes than those remaining on the course and earn a victory without playing all 18 holes (3&2, 4&3, 5&4, etc.). In tighter matches, golfers can win by just one stroke requiring play on the final hole (1UP).

Whichever team totals the most individual wins in its specific matchup secures a win for the match and earns three points for a victory.
