THIS WEEK
The Utah Golf team takes a quick jaunt up to Boulder, Colo. this week to compete at the Mark Simpson Invitational and adjoining Les Fowler Individual events.

Utah's starting five will be looking to take what they learned during opening week at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup to elevate its play in this week's Colorado Buffalo hosted event at the Boulder Country Club from Sep. 29-30.

"It's great to be back competing after a week of practice," head coach Garrett Clegg said. "Boulder Country Club is a fantastic venue and is very similar to our home club at the Salt Lake Country Club. I know the boys are excited to get back out there and show improvement over our first tournament. I am excited to see how they respond this week."

Additionally, the Utes will have the ability to assess their players not competing in the starting five this week at the Les Fowler Individual which will be played at the Bear Creek Golf Club from Sep. 28-29.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone on the team to be able to compete," Clegg said. "For our players not in the starting five—it's a chance for them to showcase how hard they have been working too. Tournament golf is how we build depth and improve. These rounds are vital for each of our players. I hope we see some great things out of Jan, Jaxon, Will, and Adam."

Utah's traditional starting five will be playing at the Mark Simpson Invitational while its remaining four athletes will compete at the Les Fowler Individual.

The Mark Simpson Invitational will feature 17 programs including the Utes from across the country with BYU, Colorado Christian, Colorado Mines, Garden City Community College, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State only participating in the Les Fowler Individual. Â

TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The Mark Simpson Invitational will consist of 36 holes of continuous play on Tuesday, Sep. 29, with a shotgun format start in carts at 8:15 a.m. (MDT). Play will resume on Wednesday, Sep. 30 with an additional 18 holes and staggered starting times starting at 7:30 a.m., off both holes 1 and 10.

Mark Simpson served as the Colorado Buffalos golf head coach for 29 years (1977-2005), until he passed away at the age of 55 on Dec. 5, 2005; he was inducted earlier that year into the GCAA Hall of Fame.

The Mark Simpson Invitational was created by current CU head coach Roy Edwards in his honor beginning in 2010.

Les Fowler preceded Simpson as head coach, also for 29 years (1948-1976) before retiring; he is in both the CU Athletic Hall of Fame, the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

The individual event, the first of which occurred in 2019 between individuals from Air Force, CU, CSU, DU and UNC is named in his honor.
