4x800 relay squad places third.
DES MOINES, Iowa, and PROVO, Utah – The Utah track and field team wrapped up day one of competition at the Drake Relays and BYU Robinson Invitational on Friday, highlighted by the third-place finish by the 4x800 squad the Drake Relays.
"We closed the night with the 4x800-meter relay and it was awesome," Kepler explained. "We were in the race the entire way. There was a group of three that broke away, Ohio State, Iowa State, and us, and just as we were getting ready to handoff there was a little separation and that's all it took for Iowa State to pull away."
The 4x800 squad made up of senior Grace Englund, sophomores Sarah Newton and Nicole Griffiths, and junior Caitlin Faust finished the race with a time of 8:44.72.
In the 4x1600-meter relay, seniors Megan Perkins-Killian, Jessica Sams, Dakota Grossman, and junior Sadie Wassum made up the Utah team that placed fifth with a time of 20:11.23.
"Another top-five finish here at Drake and that's outstanding," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We led off with Megan Perkins and she did a nice job. She did about 1,000-meters of her 1,600-meter leg and then a gap developed and opened up so we got behind a little bit there. But then I thought our next three legs did a nice job and got us back to fifth so I was excited for those girls."
Senior Hannah McInturff represented the Utes in the 1,500-meter race where she finished in 11th with a time of 4:34.11.
In Provo, senior Raynee Helm Wheelock led the way for the Utes earning a semifinal time of 12.18 in the 100-meter race. Wheelock will compete in the final race tomorrow.
Wheelock also competed in the 200-meter with freshman Jackie Martin. Martin finished in 13th with a time of 24.87 while Wheelock placed 16th with a time of 25.05. Martin and Wheelock both recorded new personal bests and moved themselves into sixth and 10th place all-time respectively at Utah in the event.
The Utes will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Drake Relays and BYU Robinson Invitational.
