The Utes wrap up Pac-12 Championship weekend.
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Junior Caitlin Faust finished sixth in the 800-meter finals to lead the Utah track and field team at the final day of the Pac-12 Championships. As a team, the Utes earned 15 points placing 12th overall in the Pac-12 Championships.
"Overall, I was really pleased with the effort and a lot of our kids placed higher than they were ranked coming in and that's something we talk about all the time," head coach Kyle Kepler stated. "It's the best of the best here in this league and I definitely thought we got better today. I am very excited to keep the group coming back, moving forward and it was certainly a nice way to send off our seniors."
Faust finished the race in a personal-best time of 2:06.70. Sophomore Sarah Newton also competed in 800 final earning seventh with a personal-best time of 2:07.27. Faust moved into sixth all-time at Utah with her time while Newton continues to rank eighth. Faust earned three points for Utah while Newton picked up two points.
"It was a great job by them to not only run their lifetime bests in the biggest meet of the year thus far, but to pick up some valuable points for us which was certainly outstanding," Kepler said.
The Utes 4x400 squad made up of senior Alissa Atisme, freshman Jackie Martin, senior Grace Englund, and Faust, also earned two points towards the team score as they captured seventh with a time of 3:42.26.
In the 5,000-meter race, the Utes stayed close together as all six competitors finished within seven places of each other. Sophomore Poppy Tank led the Utes placing 20th with a time of 17:15.32. Seniors Jessica Sams, Hannah McInturff, and Louise Mercer stayed together as they placed 22nd (Sams, 17:15.32), 23rd (McInturff, 17:21.10), and 24th (Mercer, 17:24.04). Rounding out the competitors for the Utes was freshman Aubrey Argyle and redshirt freshman Trina Moreno. Argyle finished 25th with a time of 17:29.60 while Moreno earned 27th with a time of 17:36.04.
"I thought our kids ran hard and we had some youngsters in there getting their first experience in that race along with kids coming back from racing yesterday," Kepler explained. "It was super windy conditions, a very tactical race with it being slow early on and then the pace just kept on ramping up and unfortunately we fell off the pace with about a mile to go but I still thought our kids ran great and competed really hard."
The Utes will learn soon which athletes have qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary meet, held May 24-26 in Sacramento, Calif. Grayson Murphy (3,000 steeplechase, 10,000), Faust (800), Newton (800) and Sams (5,000) currently have season best times that are among the top 50 in the west.
