"The four we have this year are really good and they have been running outstanding here at the end of the season when you want them to," head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "We have kids on every day so that's kind of fun when you have races going every day and you're not so spread out that you are going back and forth racing, not racing, etc. But hopefully we can get a few of them advanced on to Eugene for the NCAA Championships and get back to work there in a couple of weeks as well."
Â
Headlining for the Utes will be Murphy, who will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase which is scheduled to take place on Friday at 9:00 p.m. (PST). This year, Murphy competed in three events where she earned her qualifying time of 9:51.36 at the Stanford Invite early this season. With this time Murphy ranks fifth in the NCAA, first in the Pac-12, and broke her own school record in the event. At Utah, Murphy is a four-time All-American including earning first-team All-America honors in the 3,000-steeplechase in 2017 with a fifth-place finish.
Â
Faust and Newton will be competing in the 800-meter race on Thursday at 8:35 p.m. (PST). Being solid for Utah in the 800 all season, Faust (2:06.70) and Newton (2:07.27) both ran their best races of the season at the Pac-12 Championships. They both recorded new personal bests while Faust moved into sixth all-time at Utah. Newton continues to rank eighth all-time at Utah.
Â
Sams qualified for the 5,000-meter race that is set to take place on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. (PST). Sams earned her qualifying time of 16:14.44 at the Mt. SAC Relays back in April, a new personal best that ranks in fourth place all-time at Utah.
Â
Each individual event will have 48 competitors, with the top 12 based on a combination of heat finish and time advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
