SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team hosts BYU on Tuesday, May 8, at 6:00 p.m. MT, at Smith's Ballpark.
The game will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks and locally on ESPN 700 AM.
Utah holds a 2-1 lead over the first of the three games played between the Utes and Cougars this year. Utah dropped the first game back on March 20, 7-6 in 10 innings. The Utes rallied to tie the game in the ninth inning with four runs to push the contest to extras. Utah won the second game, 4-3, on April 3, led by a three-run home run off the bat of Erick Migueles. In game three on April 24, Utah scored six runs in the fifth inning in the 8-4 victory.
The overall winner of the four contests will earn three points towards the Deseret First Duel rivalry series. Utah has already clinched the overall win for the 2017-18 season and leads 21.5-13.5 with just baseball remaining. Utah has scored points this year in football, women's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and women's soccer.
Utah is fifth in the Pac-12 in doubles (77) and hits (416). The Utes are fourth in the league with 14 triples. Utah is tied for first in the league in double plays (37) and ranks fourth in assists (442). The pitchers lead the league with 14 pickoffs.
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., ranks in the top 10 in the league in several categories including leading the league in doubles (20) and ranking third in the Pac-12 in batting average (.386). He is second in the league in hits per game (1.56). Oliver Dunn is tied for second in the league with 28 double plays and ranks sixth in assists (117). On the pitching staff, Trenton Stoltz is tied for second in the Pac-12 with 26 appearances on the mound and is tied for fifth with six saves. Josh Lapiana's four pickoffs is tied for second in the league. Tanner Thomas and Brett Brocoff have allowed just two home runs this year, which is among the fewest in the league.
