The Utes travel to Stanford, Calif.
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah track and field team prepares as they travel to Stanford, Calif., to compete at the 2018 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships. The championships are hosted by Stanford University and will take place Saturday-Sunday, May 12-13, at the Cobb Track and Angell Field. The championships will feature some of the best athletes in the country, along with nine nationally ranked teams.
"This is the time of the year where it all comes together and you hope you can get people peaked properly and they can have their best performances of the year," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "This team has just done a terrific job, great culture, and my assistant coaches coach Colwell and coach Wartenberger have done an outstanding job of helping these girls grow, improve, get better and motivate, positivity whatever you want to call it across the board. It's really been an enjoyable year of track and field and an enjoyable year coaching these gals and seeing them grow."
Headlining for the Utes will be senior All-American Grayson Murphy. This season, Murphy placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invite with a school-record time of 9:51.36 (steeplechase) and ranks fourth in the NCAA this season. At Utah, Murphy is a four-time All-American between cross country and track including earning first-team All-America honors in the 3,000-steeplechase in 2017.
Junior Caitlin Faust, sophomore Sarah Newton, and senior Grace Englund have been solid for the Utes in the 800. Faust ranks 11th, Newton 13th, and Englund 25th this season in the event in the league. This season, Faust and Newton both moved into seventh and eighth in the top-10 list at Utah in the 800 event posting times of 2:07.90 and 2:08.06 respectively.
Senior Jessica Sams had a breakthrough race as she recorded a personal best time of 16:14.44 in the 5,000 at the Mt. SAC Relays. With this time Sams currently ranks 14th in the Pac-12 in the event.
Senior Louise Mercer ranks 19th in the Pac-12 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:07.57. Senior Dakota Grossman (11:08.50) and freshman Bella Williams (11:13.94) rank 20th and 21st in the league respectively in the event.
Senior Alissa Atisme holds school records in the 100 and 200-meter events along with ranking third all-time at Utah in the 400. Freshman Jackie Martin ranks eighth in the 100 and ninth in the 200 all-time at Utah. Senior Raynee Helm Wheelock recorded a new personal best time of 12.07 to move her into third all-time in the 100.
Freshman Rachel Whipple and Ruby Jane Mathewson both rank in the top 25 in the Pac-12 in the 400-meter hurdles. Whipple ranks 24th (1:03.09) while Mathewson ranks 25th (1:03.23).
The 4x400 team of Atisme, Englund, Martin, and Faust ran a season-best time of 3:41.15 at the Beach Invite to give them a ranking of eighth in the Pac-12. The Utah 4x100-meter relay team made up of Wheelock, Martin, senior Madison Lanford, and Atisme broke the school record this year with a time of 46.13. This time ranks them 11th in the Pac-12.
Junior Eliza Hansen will represent the Utes in the high jump. Hansen ranks 17th in the Pac-12 with a personal-best height of 5'5.0" (1.65 meters).
