Utes Fall To No. 10 Washington, 21-7

SALT LAKE CITY – Despite another strong defensive outing for the Utah football program, the Utes were unable to come up with the win against No. 10 Washington, falling 21-7. Utah is 2-1 this season and 0-1 in Pac-12 play.
The Utes played in front of a sold-out crowd of 47,445, the sixth-largest crowd in Rice-Eccles Stadium history and the largest since 2016.
Utah was able to hold Washington to just 155 passing yards with the Huskies entering the game averaging 366.5 to rank second in the league and 11thin the nation. Cody Barton and Chase Hansen led the defense, both finishing the game with 11 tackles each, their second straight game in double-digits.
Tyler Huntley was 20-of-38 passing for 138 yards (1 INT) with Britain Covey leading the Utes in receiving with eight catches for 54 yards. Covey ended up with a team-best 133 all-purpose yards (54, 77 punt return, 2 rush), leading the team in all-purpose yards for the second time this season.
Zack Moss led Utah in rushing with 13 carries for 67 yards, scoring Utah's only touchdown of the game in the first quarter. It was his third rushing score of the season and the 15thof his career.
After a quick three-and-out for the Utes, the Huskies struck first on a 38-yard rushing touchdown with 11:10 left to play in the first quarter. They took a 7-0 lead after driving down field for five plays and 65 yards, taking 2:33 off the clock.
Utah evened the score late in the first quarter with a four-yard touchdown from Moss to make it 7-7 with 21 seconds left to play. Moss and Huntley contributed 63 combined rushing yards on the 80-yard drive, including a season-long 28-yard rush by Huntley to put Utah in scoring territory.
It didn't take long for Washington to regain the lead, scoring on the first drive of the second quarter. The Huskies drove to the red zone quickly with Utah putting up a fight on the goal line, but Jake Browning was able to sneak in a one-yard score to end an eight-play, 75-yard drive to give the Huskies a 14-7 advantage.
The rest of the second quarter remained scoreless with both defenses putting down pressure on the quarterbacks. It was a lot of the same heading into the third quarter, but Washington was able to convert on a six-yard passing touchdown with 8:37 left to make it a two-score game.
The Utes had chances in the fourth quarter, including a Pita Tonga interception that put the Utes on the Washington 11-yard-line, but Utah was unable to convert, eventually leaving the field on a failed fourth down attempt.
Despite holding Washington to just 48 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter, the Utes couldn't find the end zone, falling 21-7.
Utah heads into its bye week this week before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 29, taking on Washington State on the road.
