SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis program shutout Utah State and Southern Utah in its home openers today, improving to 2-1 on the season.Â
"It was a good day for us and we definitely learned a lot about dual match tennis," head coach
Mat Iandolo said. "I felt like we got in a good battle from both teams and I was very impressed with Southern Utah and I think they have a great chance at winning their league this year."Â
Â
To start the day off, the Utes were able to earn the doubles point against the Aggies. The duo of
Brianna Chisholm and
Madison Tattini came away with the first win, defeating Utah State's Rhoda Tanui and Alexandra Taylor with a score of 6-2, at the No. 1 position. Then to seal the doubles point on the No. 2 court,
Whitney Hekking and
Leah Heimuli topped Annaliese County and Lucy Octave with a score of 6-3.
Â
The Utes were then able to take a 2-0 lead over Utah State at the No. 6 position, as Utah State did not present an opponent to take on Hekking, giving Hekking the win by default. Chisholm then followed with a quick victory at the No. 1 spot, knocking off Rhoda Tanui, 6-2, 6-1.Â
To then secure the win for the Utah women's tennis team, Tattini carded a victory on the No. 2 court against Alexadra Taylor, 6-0, 6-2, to put the Utes up 4-0. Following Tattini,
Emily Dush,
Lindsay Hung and
Taylor Calton all pitched in wins of their own, to give Utah the 7-0 sweep over Utah State.
Against Southern Utah, the Utes claimed the doubles points with Hung and Dush beating the team of Ghita Nassik and Hsuan Yu Lin 6-3 and Hekking and
Anya Lamoreaux defeating Jana Weiss and Zoe Tanti 6-2.Â
Dush got things started for the Utes on court three with a quick 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniela Cozzi with Heimuli pulling away for a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court five. Next up, Hung claimed her second win of the day, taking down Weiss 6-3, 6-2 on court two while Hekking came away with a gritty 6-4, 6-3 win on court four.Â
Lamoreaux wrapped up the day with a big win on court six, defeating Jessica Stefan 75-, 6-7, 10-4. The Utes return to action on Feb. 8 and Feb. 10 when they host New Mexico and Boise State.
