SALT LAKE CITY – Big second-half from
Riley Battin and
Both Gach helped the White Team come back from a 13-point deficit in the final 4:33 minutes to defeat the Red Team 67-64 Tuesday night inside the Huntsman Center at the annual Night with the Utes exhibition.
The first-half saw the squad split into two teams before the coaching staff mixed the teams up in the second frame.
The Red team starters of
Timmy Allen,
Rylan Jones,
Branden Carlson, Battin and Gach got off to a quick 4-0 start and had good looks on defense early on. Meanwhile, the added rim protection between freshman
Matt Van Komen and Carlson saw seven blocks in the first half and 12 total on the night – five of which came from the two freshmen.
Gach got the crowd going at the 7:33 mark of the first-half when Jones poked the ball away from
Brandon Haddock and passed the ball ahead to the 6-7 sophomore for a breakaway jam. That dunk sandwiched an 11-0 run for the Red Team.
Trailing 20-11 with 5:40 left in the half, the White Team found their groove offensively and cut the deficit to 24-23 thanks to a 13-4 run on a fast break lay-in from Jantunen with 1:21 remaining in the first half before taking a narrow 25-24 edge into the break.
Late in the second-half the Red Team broke away – this time thanks to a combined 7-of-7 from the field effort to take the 61-48 lead on a lay-up from Jantunen at the 4:33 mark. However, that lead was during that time frame.
In addition to Battin's 19 points, five other players registered double-digit points. Gach and
Mikael Jantunen each had 12 points while
Alfonso Plummer and Van Komen added 11 points apiece. Sophomore
Timmy Allen added 10 points of his own to round out the list of players in double-figures.
