SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's basketball team found its rhythm on offense in the second-half Wednesday night inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center en route to a dominating 88-47 victory against UT Tyler in the team's only exhibition game before the 2019-20 season-opener.
"I just liked the energy with the guys," head coach
Larry Krystkowiak said in his opening statement postgame. "I thought we played pretty hard and tried to share the ball. If I'm not mistaken, we had four turnovers in the first half, so we took care of the ball, played pretty hard and got out in transition. It was good for us to play against that team because they were a pressure, up in your space which isn't necessarily the way we play so it was a new experience. As the game went on, the second-half field-goal percentage significantly rose, I think we shot 20-percent better in the second half and got out and ran and freed up our minds. I loved the fact that we doubled them on the glass and that was a focal point knowing you were going to play an undersized team."
Both teams had a slow start offensively, and saw Utah lead UT Tyler just 8-5 heading into the first media break. The Patriots took a short-lived 11-10 lead over the Utes on a 3-pointer from Quinn Smith and didn't score again for the next 6:04 minutes, which Utah took full advantage of and went on an 8-0 run for the 18-11 lead.
The Utes headed into the final media break (4:00) of the first half on top 27-16 thanks to a long pass from
Timmy Allen to
Mikael Jantunen for the easy fast-break lay-up.
Utah's offense started to get in rhythm late in the first half and went on an 11-0 run that was capped off by a fast-break lay-in from
Both Gach – who completed the three-point play after drawing the foul. After a Patriot score, freshman big-man
Matt Van Komen followed with an easy jam to give the Utes a 38-20 commanding lead at the break.
With a comfortable lead, the Utes were able to rotate in every player and saw all 14 that were dressed see the floor. Despite seeing a flurry of substitutions, the Utah defense kept UT Tyler to just 34.4-percent shooting from the floor in the second half.
The offense also began to click in the second frame, shooting a combined 58.6-percent from the field on 17-of-29 shooting while 11-of-14 players found themselves in the scoring column.
A huge 19-2 spurt by Utah late in the game saw them take a commanding 80-42 lead before closing with the 88-47 exhibition victory.
Five Utes finished in double-figures, led by Gach's 15 points and five boards. Allen,
Riley Battin and
Branden Carlson were all a rebound shy of a double-double with Allen leading the charge between the three with 13 points while Batting and Carlson each scoring 12 and 13 points, respectively.
Mikael Jantunen had eight of his 12 points in the second-half before finishing with a dozen points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from the line.
By the Numbers…
The Utes won the battle on the glass 58-29 while pulling down 17 offensive boards for an 18-5 edge in second-chance points. Utah was able to use its speed for a 17-0 advantage in fast-break points. With everyone on the team getting action on the floor, Utah's bench was able to outscore the Patriots bench 35-8.
Quotable…
Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
On sophomores Timmy Allen, Both Gach and Riley Battin stepping up as leaders…
"They're great, and maybe it's not the most fair thing for sophomores to be cast in that role but I've been really impressed. I think Both is becoming more of a leader but I've been really impressed with TA and Riley. Leadership has always been a big point on our team and it seems to be a buzz word amongst the media and everyone wants to talk about it. I just think we all need to take some ownership. We're not going to cast too much pressure on them, but what I do like about it is that they've got some experience and they are sharing that with the young guys."
On how he determines who gets minutes and when in a game like this…
"Well guys get to play through some mistakes. One of the big things that we talk about with this team, and we don't have much offense in at this point, we are trying to simplify it and free up these guy's minds, but what we do have in we are putting a big premium on executing it and knowing the limited number of plays we have. If you can't do that then we're not at the point where we can play you because we can't function offensively."
On Rylan Jones' toughness…
"The charge is one of our favorite plays and I think Rylan took four of them. He's a tough kid and he actually sprained his ankle really well in practice yesterday taking a charge. I don't know how many of us would be out there playing today and I wanted to be sure, but he was in a boot last night, swelled up pretty bad and he's hobbling around but I thought the stability in the backcourt was big."
