The Utah men’s basketball team opens the 2019-20 campaign on the road against Nevada on Nov. 5.
OPENING TIP
The University of Utah men's basketball team tips off the 2019-20 campaign on the road next Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Nevada for an 8:30 p.m. (MT) start on CBS Sports Network. Rich Waltz will have the call on college basketball's opening night while Dan Dickau serves as the analyst on the broadcast.
Fans watching the game can find CBS Sports Network on DirecTV channel 221 or on DISH Network Ch. 158. For other TV providers, fans can use the channel finder.
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS
Utah's home-opener against Mississippi Valley State will be "Bob Night." For students, the first 100 in attendance will get a MUSS basketball shirt. Tying back to "Bob Night," the first 100 students can also get a yellow construction hat to do their best "Bob the Builder" impersonation. In addition, one lucky student will get a Bobby Bucher Mud Dogs Jersey.
FRIDAY FAMILY PACK
Fans looking to take advantage of Friday games this season can purchase the Friday Family Food Pack for $20. Each pack purchased comes with a general admission ticket to every Friday men's basketball game and comes with a unique concession voucher. For the Mississippi Valley State game, the voucher will be good for nachos!
OPENING TREND
Heading into Tuesday's contest against the Wolfpack, Utah is 83-27 overall in program history in season-opening games, 76-14 when kicking the season off at home and 7-13 when opening the year on the road. Head men's basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak is 8-0 all-time in season-openers since taking over the program, but next Tuesday will be the first time the Utes open the season on the road under his direction.
FAMILIAR FACE IN THE PAC(K)
The Utes will have a familiar face leading the opposing team next Tuesday with Steve Alford roaming the sidelines for Nevada. Alford, who spent the last five-plus seasons at UCLA, recently took over the Wolfpack program after the departure of Eric Musselman.
SCOUTING NEVADA
Nevada basically returns two players that saw any sort of minutes on the floor last season on a team that went 29-5 on the year, including a regular-season title (tied) and NCAA Tournament appearance. With the departure of seven seniors and some transfers, first-year head coach Steve Alford reloaded his roster with eight newcomers along with redshirt freshman K.J. Hymes – who was voted on by the Mountain West Conference media corps. as the preseason freshman of the year.
Jazz Johnson and Nisré Zouzoua are the two most veteran players on the team heading into their senior season. Johnson averaged 11 points and shot 48.7-percent from the floor last season while Zouzoua saw action off the bench in 21-of-34 games. Hyme, who averaged 12.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks out of high school was a three-star recruit according to ESPN, Scout and Rivals his senior year at Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix, Ariz.
UP NEXT
After opening the season on the road, Utah returns home to the friendly confines of the Jon M. Huntsman Center where it'll play host to Mississippi Valley State for its home-opener on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks with Barry Tompkins on the call and Eddie House as the Analyst.
LOOKING AHEAD
After hosting Mississippi Valley State in its home-opener, Utah will entertain Minnesota on Friday, Nov. 15, in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Gophers, who got the better of the Utes last season in Williams Arena 78-69, return two starters and seven letterwinners. Minnesota finished last season 22-14 overall and lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Michigan State, 70-50.
