SALT LAKE CITY –Jimmy Perkins scored the first goal in Utah lacrosse history and Josh Stout scored three for a hat trick as the Utes fell in their inaugural game, 21-6, to Vermont on Friday afternoon to open the 2019 season.
"All-in-all, it was an awesome day for the Utes, Utah, lacrosse, this city, our players and our program," head coach Brian Holman said. "We are doing nothing but moving forward. The main takeaway is that we're a brand new program and we have a long ways to go. We know that. The good parts, what I loved, is what we hang on – we're going to play until the bitter end, we're going to be tough, and coach [Chris] Feifs commented how hard our kids played. That was the plus. The disappointing part is that I think there are a lot of things that we left out there. I believe if we played at the level we're capable of we would have been much more competitive, so I was a little disappointed in that."
Vermont scored 19 seconds in to the game and took a 2-0 lead in front of the 3,215 at Rice-Eccles stadium before the Utes got on the board with Perkins' goal, assisted by Cambere. The Catamounts scored two before Josh Stout added an unassisted tally for his first goal of the game to put the score at 4-2.
Vermont pulled ahead with the next six goals for a 10-2 lead. Josh Stout helped the Utes end the first half strong with back-to-back goals to end the half and trailed 10-4 at halftime.
The Utes scored two goals in the second half with Fjeldsted scoring on an assist from Josh Stout in the third quarter and Jake Stout putting up a goal on an assist from Lanigan.
Keeper Liam Donnelly made 11 saves on the night for the Utes. Vermont held a 45-29 shot advantage.
Utah continues at home next week against Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 9, at noon at Judge Memorial High School.
