The Utes got indoctrinated into the NCAA with a 21-6 loss to Vermont (which is ranked or has received votes in several polls) in its inaugural game.
Josh Stout scored a hat trick while
Jimmy Perkins,
Aaron Fjeldsted and
Jake Stout also added goals for the Utes. Five of the six goals were scored by Utah natives. Head coach
Brian Holman believes Utes learned a lot from their first game.
"I think our guys learned that the pace of play is a lot quicker, the ball moves a lot faster, and all the things we've been talking about," Holman said. "It's hard to replicate that in practice. I think Friday's game is going to serve us perfectly as we move into this week. We learned a lot about ourselves, we learned a lot about our preparation and we learned that if we don't execute the things that we can control, we're going to be in trouble, but if we do, I think we're going to be able to compete. That's the goal for this week, to focus on the things that we can do. We can shoot the ball better, we can get to the right spots on our clears, we can be tougher on ground balls – we can control all of those things. That's what we're going to focus on and if we can do that, I think we'll be much better going into Saturday. We're moving onward and upward."
Mercer lost its opening game to North Carolina, 20-9. The Bears went 4-10 last season.
Holman is grateful for the fans who came out to support the Utes in their first game.
"The support, the crowd, was fantastic," Holman said. "The staff and I talked this weekend about how grateful we are to everyone and how hard everyone worked to make it a great day. Everyone involved in putting on that production was unbelievable. I just want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart."
