The Utes are 1-2 on the season and continue to learn more about their team with each game.
"I think we're right where we maybe expected to be," Utah head coach
Brian Holman said. "The positives are the energy on the team. The positives are our willingness to keep playing - something we talked about from day one, eliminating the scoreboard and keep playing lacrosse. The positives are someone like
Josh Stout raising his game to an incredible level. That's all been exciting to see. Certain aspects of each part of our game – offense, defense and special teams – have done some good things, but I think we need to start being a little more consistent with our decision making. I think that's gotten us in trouble a little bit. Certain moments against Hofstra we had a three-goal deficit and we had chances to cut it to two and we just didn't make the wisest choices. Taking chances when we didn't really need to take chances and allowing them to score that fourth goal. I think that's all part of the learning process. What we have to do as coaches is do a better job of continuing to educate our guys and helping them understand how to read things to make better in-game decisions.
Sophomore
Josh Stout leads the nation with 15 goals scored and is tied for third in the country with 5.00 goals per game.
Samuel Cambere is tied for the NCAA lead with nine caused turnovers.
Seth Neeleman is tied for 12th in the nation with 18 ground balls.
Denver, ranked eighth in the latest USILA poll and 13th by Inside Lacrosse, is 1-1 on the season, defeating Air Force and falling to Duke (currently ranked 5th and 12th respectively), 10-9. The Pioneers are coached by the legendary Bill Tierney, who has won seven NCAA titles between two different programs.
Air Force is also 1-1 on the year. In addition to the Denver loss, the Falcons beat Marist, 12-6. Air Force faces Cleveland State on Saturday before taking on the Utes.
"Denver is perennially a top five team, and is coached by a legendary coach who I have so much respect for as a person," Holman said. "It's exciting for me and I want our team to be excited about having the opportunity to play our closest neighbor in their backyard. We have a lot of kids from Colorado on our team. Then we turn right around and go to Air Force. We have such respect for all the academies. It's going to be a big challenge in 24 hours but we're going to have fun and approach it the same way we have everything else – with no fear and to play the best that we can and continue to learn more about our program. We're really looking forward to it."
