SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team knocked off the host of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament, defeating San Diego 6-5 on Sunday, February 24.
The Utes scored six runs on eight hits with
Erick Migueles,
Rykker Tom and
Matt Richardson each having two hits.
Utah trailed for most of the game and was down three runs two different times before scoring three in the seventh to tie it up and then took the lead for good in the eighth. The Utes scored in four straight innings from the fifth to the eighth inning to earn their second victory of the season.
To start the game, San Diego took a 3-0 lead in the first two innings and it wasn't until the fourth inning when Utah started to threaten at the plate.
The Utes loaded the bases in the fourth, but couldn't get a run across. They put pressure on the Toreros once again in the fifth and broke through scoring their first run. After scoring another run in the sixth to get within one, San Diego added two more runs in the bottom half to go up 5-2.
Facing a three-run deficit once again, Utah responded in the top of the seventh with three runs to tie up the score. After loading the bases with a San Diego error and two walks, Migueles hit a fly ball to center fielder and
Dominic Foscalina tagged up to score from third.
Shea Kramer drew another walk to load the bases back up and Tom came through with the clutch two-RBI single to tie up the score.
With the score tied at 5, Richardson hit a leadoff double in the eighth and then advanced to third on a wild pitch with no outs. With two outs, RBI leader Migueles came up clutch once again with a single to score the go ahead run.
For the second week in a row,
Dustyn Schramm pitched multiple innings to help Utah get a victory. Against San Diego, he ended up earning the win after going 2.1 innings pitched surrendering no runs and only allowing three hits.
Zac McCleve also was strong out of the bullpen giving up no runs in his 1.1 innings pitched. He entered the game in the sixth inning with the bases loaded with one out and struck out a batter and then got out of the inning with a line out to short.
Joshua Tedeschi got his first start of the season and pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits.
Utah finished the weekend 1-2 and moved its overall record to 2-4. They will stay on the road and travel to UNLV for a battle on Tuesday, February 26. First pitch will be at 3 p.m. MT.
