Utah is 2-3 overall and is 1/3 of the way through its season. The Utes are coming off their second victory of the year, a comeback win over Air Force on Sunday that head coach
Brian Holman feels is a turning point moving forward.
"The question I posed to them this morning is 'what do we do with this?'" Holman said. "You talk about the age-old adage that you're never as bad as you feel after you lose and you're definitely not as good as you think after you win. This clearly plays out for us. That was a really sloppy game against Air Force. We said to the team this morning, we were down 4-1, we beat them 5-1 down the stretch, and that's a really good sign for us, especially against a service academy. I keep emphasizing that because those players are trained military personnel. That's the good part.
"I think it's a really neat time for us to take the momentum from a hard-fought win where we didn't play well, and do something with that. If we can start executing the details a lot better and then take that grit and determination factor that we've realized we have and combine those two, that's what we're searching for this week. We've played five games, it's a good time for some self reflection. I asked the guys, where are we? Are we starting to create an identity as a team? Looking for things like that over the next week or so. This will be our third-straight road trip and I think we've done a good job so far handling that. I feel like this game is almost our first real game. I sensed that from the kids this morning. That win [against Air Force] was an amazing thing in sports. We were struggling and I questioned everything even after we won, and that's the mentality I want our guys to have. Yes, we won, but if we don't clean these things up and get better, we're in for a long haul going forward. I sensed this morning that they got it. I think they're in great spirits but they also know we need to clean our stuff up. We have a lot of areas where we are just missing, and that is so encouraging. I think the guys have a willingness to want to clean that up, and that's what this week is all about."
