Despite a pair of close losses in the Utes (4-9) last two games against Mount St. Mary's and Hartford, head coach
Brian Holman continues to be pleased with the direction the program has been going in.
"It's part of the process," Holman said. "If you break it down, we've learned how to prepare. Then we've learned how to compete – other than the big games, we've been in every single game. I also don't want to send mixed messages that that's good enough, but you don't want to lose sight of that. We've learned how to prepare, we've learned how to compete, now we have to learn how to win. What's the difference between earlier in the season when we won those games, and now? First, every team we're playing right now has a vested interest in moving forward. We're playing teams that are in the mix to play in the postseason. They are focused on preparing and winning games. The stakes are higher at this point in the season. Second, the word is out about us. These teams know that we're not a pushover and so these teams are preparing to beat us. It's tough to get wins at this level. At the end of the day, we're going to learn how to win these games and our shells are getting harder. That's what I told the guys. It's going to break through. But I don't want us to lose sight of the fact that we're doing a lot of really good things. That was my message to the team on Saturday. It's not fun losing, but what are we doing with it? Are we going to learn and grow from it and try to get better?
Of the 15 Division I men's lacrosse teams that have made their debut since 2010, the Utes are the fifth to win at least four games in their inaugural season.
