NEW SEASON, NEW PARTNERS
In the first weekend of the 2019 season for Utah, all five pairs for the team had never seen action together before. Aside from Utah's No. 1 duo of
Dani Drews and
Tawnee Luafalemana, all of Utah's pairs had at least one member of the duo that was competing in the sand for the first time of their Ute careers.
Keana Smalls,
Olivia Teerlink,
Jessica Villela,
Kinga Windisch, and
Megan Yett all made their debuts during the first weekend of play.
Â
ALL PAC-12 ACCOLADES
Since joining the Utah beach volleyball team,
Dani Drews has set the tone for the team. In her first season with the Utes, Drews was named to the All Pac-12 Freshman Team, as well as the All Pac-12 Second Team. Drews went 6-8 on the season after spending her first three duals in the No. 2 pair before moving permanently to the No. 1 position for Utah.
Â
The Sandy, Utah native notched her second straight All Pac-12 Second Team selection last season as a sophomore after totaling 10 wins, which included eight straight victories at one point. Drews also got it done in the classroom and was named to the honorable mention Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Academic Team.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Utah opened the season facing stiff competition against No. 11-ranked California where the Utes dropped the road contest, 1-4. Drews and Luafalemana picked up an impressive win in the No. 1 position downing the Golden Bears' top duo of Mima Mirkovic and Jordan Polo in a three-set victory.
Â
The Utes then competed in the Saint Mary's College Tournament and picked up wins over San Francisco and Feather River, but fell to No. 20-ranked Saint Mary's. Utah edged San Francisco 3-2 after
Lauren Sproule and
Jessica Villela clinched the dual win with a three-set victory in their first match as a duo. Utah closed out the weekend with a dominant 5-0 sweep against Feather River and did not drop a single set at any of the five positions.
