DES MOINES, Iowa – The Utah track and field team opened up competition at the Drake Relays on Thursday with freshman
Scarlet Dale capturing the event title in the 1,500-meter unseeded race and two others finishing inside of the top-10.Â
Â
Dale earned the first-place overall finish crossing the line in a new personal-best time of 4:28.29, just barely beating her previous record of 4:28.73. Sophomores
Bella Williams and
Trina Moreno finished alongside each other earning seventh and eighth-place, respectively. Williams finished in a new PR time of 4:32.02 while Moreno finished in a time of 4:33.07.Â
Â
"I thought Bella and Scarlet did a nice job of being patient on the opening lap and then inserting some pace into the race after that," head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "Their finishes are still a bit of a work in progress but that's why we run these races and as always we are happy to get the win and compete well here at the Drake Relays."Â
Â
Senior
Megan Killian and freshman
Kennedy Powell rounded out the competitors running in the 1,500-meter unseeded race for the Utes. Killian finished in 13th in a time of 4:33.82 while Powell paced in with a time of 4:36.16 to earn 17th.Â
Â
"We will get back at it tomorrow with the relay races which should be very exciting and against some great competition," Kepler said. Â
Â
Utah will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Drake Relays with competition slated to begin at 8:50 a.m. CDT (7:50 a.m. MDT) with the women's 4x800-meter relay. Â
