“For me it was important to keep perspective and remember how lucky I was to actually be here.”
When I was offered a full ride scholarship to one of the most competitive ski programs in the nation, in a city that was filled with friends, I couldn’t say no. I had actually never been to Salt Lake before I moved, so I didn’t know much.
I was lucky to be surrounded by amazing support staff and teammates both in athletics and in school. Taking advantage of that can be very helpful, and good teammates and friends can help you get through even the toughest days. Being a student-athlete can also be very consuming, for me it was important to keep perspective and remember how lucky I was to actually be here. "It is just a test, and it is just a race,” just do your best.
It can do wonders to spend a little time doing something completely different - for me that was baking. As an alpine skier I have been lucky that my diet has allowed for a little extra consumption of carbohydrates, and I have taken advantage. Spending an hour or two baking could mean a world of difference for my mood and feelings, which would allow me to perform better when I was studying or skiing. My favorite things to bake are probably brownies, traditional Norwegian buns with vanilla custard, or coffee-chocolate cake.
I feel amazed to be graduating this weekend. It went so fast; I can’t believe it is all over. Hopefully in five years I will live somewhere exciting abroad with my boyfriend, and have a job that is challenging and rewarding.
