Utah Football Falls to USC, 30-23

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Utah football program suffered its first loss of the season, falling at USC 30-23 on Friday night. The Utes are 3-1 this season and 0-1 to start Pac-12 play.
Outside of tying the game in the first quarter, the Utes trailed the entire game, unable to get momentum on either side of the ball. Despite holding USC to just 13 rushing yards, the Trojans were able to go for 368 passing with three of their four touchdowns coming through the air.
Utah finished the game with 457 yards on offense that included 210 passing and 247 on the ground. Senior Tyler Huntley was 22-of-30 passing (73.3) for his third 200-yard passing game of the season, finishing with 210 and one touchdown.
Huntley also had 60 rushing yards on a team-high 18 carries while Devin Brumfield rushed for a career-high 63 yards (6.3 ypc) that included a career-long 30-yard rush. Derrick Vickers and Jaylen Dixon both led the Utes in receiving with 38 yards each with Cole Fotheringham racking up 23 yards and a touchdown on three catches.
Devin Lloyd once again led the Utes in tackles with seven while Bradlee Anae added five that included two tackles for loss and a sack. Tareke Lewis, Mika Tafua and Terrell Burgess recorded four tackles each with Burgess adding his first-career interception.
Both USC and Utah scored on its first possessions of the game, starting with the Trojans jumping on the scoreboard first with 12:57 remaining in the quarter. USC's quarterback found his wide receiver open toward the corner of the end zone for 29 yards and a touchdown, giving them a 7-0 lead on a seven-play, 81-yard drive.
It didn't take long for Utah to even the score with a 17-yard rushing touchdown from Devonta'e Henry-Cole, set up by a 38-yard pass from Huntley to Dixon to put the Utes in the red zone. The drive took 2:18 off the clock for five plays and 75 yards to make it 7-7 with 10:39 on the clock in the first quarter.
The first quarter shootout continued with 8:11 on the clock when USC regained the lead on a 31-yard passing touchdown, giving them a 14-7 advantage. The Trojans were able to run 2:21 off the clock for five plays and 74 yards on their second score of the game.
The Utes were able to make it a four-point game with 6:44 remaining in the second quarter after the Utes were unable to find the end zone on the drive. Utah turned to kicker Jadon Redding to knock in a 38-yard field goal to make it 14-10, ending an eight-play, 60-yard drive that took 3:59 off the clock.
USC opened the second half scoring with 9:54 left to play in the third quarter on a 77-yard pass to give the Trojans a 21-10 lead. It was a six-play, 90-yard drive that took 2:01 off the clock for the 11-point lead.
Utah continued to battle late in the third quarter with Burgess coming up with a huge interception on the USC 43, returning it 29 yards to the USC 14-yard line. After a few rushing attempts that landed the Utes on the two-yard line, Huntley dumped the ball over the crowded goal line to Fotheringham for a two-yard touchdown to cut the USC lead to 21-17 with 3:47 to go.
After finding themselves on the USC seven-yard line with 11:57 on the clock in the fourth quarter, the Utes were once again unable to find the end zone, settling on a 24-yard field goal from Redding to make it a one-point game. The 10-play, 62-yard drive took 5:09 off the clock, making it 21-20.
The Utes regained possession after USC was forced to punt, starting their drive on their own six-yard line. After a holding penalty pushed the Utes back for no gain, Huntley was caught in the end zone while trying to throw the ball away, but ended up getting called for intentional grounding that resulted in a safety to put USC up 23-20 with 8:51 remaining in the game.
USC extended its lead to 10 points with 6:58 left to play when the Trojans scored on a four-yard rush, giving them a 30-20 lead. It was the end of a five-play, 69-yard drive that took 1:48 from the clock.
Utah made it a seven-point game with 4:01 on the clock in the fourth quarter when Redding converted his third field goal of night, hitting another 38-yarder to make it 30-23. It was a 51-yard drive with nine plays, taking another 2:51 off the clock.
Unfortunately for the Utes, USC was able to convert two first downs on its final drive of the game, running down the clock for the win.
Utah returns to action when it hosts the Washington State Cougars on Saturday, Sept. 28. The game is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. MT on FS1.
