The Utes have a big day on the track in first meet of the new year.
BOISE, Idaho - The Utah women's track and field team continued its indoor campaign Saturday competing in its first meet of the new calendar year at the Bronco Invite. The Utes capped the long day of racing with four event titles and an abundance of PR's for the women of Utah.Â
"It was just a really awesome day and I am really proud of the way we competed today," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "I thought our kids really ran hard and had awesome energy all day long. Everyone was cheering for each other and it was just a great team atmosphere."Â
Sophomore Maya Lebar started the day off for Utah competing in the 60-meter dash prelims. Lebar finished in 11th, clocking a PR time of 7.89 and moved herself into a tie for eighth on the all-time Utah list. Lebar also led the Utes in the 200-meter race, capturing fifth with a mark of 25.20. Ruby Jane Mathewson and Aniya Bobo ran alongside Lebar in the 200m and placed 19th and 42nd, respectively. Mathewson posted a new PR of 26.66 while Bobo crossed the finish line with a time of 28.34.Â
Moving to the mile event, the Utes had a strong showing with all entries in the top-10 and Hessler taking home the event title for Utah. She finished with a PR time of 4:59.59 while Kennedy Powell placed two-spots back in third with a mark of 5:06.12. Making their indoor season debuts and concluding the competitors for Utah in the mile was freshman Grace Burnett and Ellie Lundgreen. Burnett placed 9th (5:20.41) with Lundgreen on her heels in 10th (5:22.70).Â
Skyler Blair joined the fun and won the 400-meter event, crossing the finish line at 56.09 and moved into seventh on Utah's all-time list. Lauren O'Banion was right behind her finishing in second and set a new PR (56.24) to move her into ninth all-time while Hessler finished in fourth with a time of 58.39.Â
In the 800-meter race, Caitlin Faust and Sophie Ryan represented the Utes running posting PR times with Faust taking home the hardware with a time of 2:10.96. Ryan finished two-places back for third and recorded a time of 2:13.91.Â
Senior Anna Busatto and sophomore Sara Leonard both finished in the top-five for Utah in the 3k. Busatto captured second, clocking a time of 10:12.04 while Leonard finished in fifth (10:22.98).
Utah's three relay squads saw much success on the track Saturday as well with all three teams finishing inside the top-10. The Utah 'A' squad made up of Fuller, Blair, York and Faust won the event, posting the fastest time of the young season at 3:46.07. The Utah 'B' team, which included O'Banion, Brooke Martin, Brooklyn James and Hessler, finished in sixth (3:54.51) while the Utah 'C' squad (Brooke Manson, Sarah Newton, Kaitlyn Mercer, and Emma Earl) placed eighth (3:58.91).
It was all Utah in the 600-meter race with the Utes placing six of their 11 entries in the top-10 and nine of their 11 inside the top-20. Newton paced the Utes, coming in second (1:32.51) with Manson right behind her in third (1:33.73) and both earning new PR's with those times. James started off the consecutive finishes for the Utes with a PR time of 1:34.18 for fifth while Fuller (1:34.18), York (1:34.87) and Mercer (1:35.88) crossing the finish line together in sixth, seventh and eighth-place, respectively. Also running for Utah was Sims (13th, 1:38.53), Ally Gomm (15th, 1:39.88), Mathewson (18th, 1:41.15, PR), Bobo (25th, 1:44.63) and Earl (29th, 1:46.66).Â
Newton, Manson, James and Fuller all clocked times that moved them into the Utah all-time top-10 list.Â
In the field, Sims was the lone representative for the Utes competing in the women's shot put. On her second throw, Sims recorded her farthest distance of 10.27-meters (33'8.50") after competing in her first shot put event of the indoor season.Â
"Really it was an awesome day. I am really excited about some of the results we saw today and we won several events including all three heats of the 4x400 relay. We put three teams on the track and we won three races so it was great," Kepler said.Â
Up Next
The Utes will now make the trip to Lubbock, Texas, to compete at the Texas Tech Invite/Multis. The three-day-meet will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday Jan. 30 - Feb. 1, at the Sports Performance Center Indoor Track.
