TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN
There was a feeling of deja vu as it didn't take long for Taylor Watson to set a new school record in the opening meet of the 2019-20 indoor season. At the Weber State Winter Open, Watson topped her own record in the 55m dash with a time of 7.13 in the prelims and backed that up with a stellar performance in the finals by clocking a PR time of 7.00 to secure the record she set a season ago at the same meet. Through two months of the indoor season, Watson's time still stands as the top time in the NCAA Division I. The Aurora, Colo., product is one of four underclassmen to own a top mark in an event early on in the season.Â
The following week, Watson continued her early season dominance at the Jackson's Open running a PR time of 7.61 and setting a new school record in the 60m race, which she set last season at the Ed Jacoby Invite.Â
In the MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), Caitlin Faust and Sophie Ryan rank inside the top-10 in the 800m with the times they clocked at the Bronco Invite. Faust (2:10.96) sits in third in the MPSF and 38th nationally in the event while Ryan (2:13.91) ranks eighth in the MPSF. The 4x400 relay squad of Oneillia Fuller, Skyler Blair, Jasie York and Faust currently sit in fifth (3:46.07) with the time they posted at the Bronco Invite.Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes competed in their first meet since returning from the holiday break at the Bronco Invite and brought home four event titles in a very strong showing that resulted in an abundance of new PR's for the women of Utah.Â
Whitney Hessler captured the first event title for the Utes in the mile race where Utah placed all entries in the top-10. Hessler finished with a new PR time while Kennedy Powell placed two-spots back in third. Making their indoor season debuts and concluding the competitors for Utah was freshman Grace Burnett and Ellie Lundgreen, who placed ninth and 10th, respectively.Â
Utah was dominant in the 400 meter event behind Skyler Blair, who moved into seventh on Utah's all-time list with a new PR time of 56.09. Lauren O'Banion finished right behind Blair, posting a new PR time (56.24) and moved into ninth all-time.
Caitlin Faust and Sophie Ryan represented Utah in the 800 meter, placing first and third with Faust winning the race with another PR time of 2:10.96. The 4x400 relay saw the Utah 'A' squad win the race and posted their fastest time of the young indoor season. The team made up of Oneilia Fuller, Blair, Jasie York and Faust clocked a time of 3:46.07 to secure the victory.Â
Utah capped off the meet dominating the 600 meter event, placing six of its 11 entries in the top-10 and nine of its top-11 inside the top-20. The Utes were paced by Sarah Newton and Brooke Manson, who ran with new PR's and finished one after the other in second and third, respectively.Â
UP NEXT
After the completion of the two meets this weekend, the Utes will have the next weekend off before splitting three-ways to compete at the Don Kirby Elite Invite, Weber State Invite and back to Seattle for the UW Classic, Feb. 13-15.Â
LOOKING FORWARD
Following that three-meet weekend, Utah will compete in its last two meets of the regular indoor season at the UW Last Chance in Seattle and at Notre Dame Friday, Feb. 21. The Utes will return to a familiar place in Seattle for the MPSF Championships at the end of the month and with a chance for Utah athletes to advance to the NCAA Championships on a familiar track in Albuquerque, N.M.
