SCOUTING THE COUGARS
Washington heads into the matchup on Saturday 12-8 overall and 3-4 in Pac-12 play after falling to Colorado 78-56 Thursday night, snapping a two-game win-streak the Cougars had thanks to a big weekend at home against the Oregon schools. The loss drops WSU to 1-4 on the year when playing in true road games and 0-3 on the road in conference action.
CJ Elleby, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week, paces the team averaging 18.8 points and 7.1 rebounds to go with a team-high 33 steals. Isaac Bonton is the only other Cougar averaging in double-figures, checking in with 14.3 points per game, 4.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Jeff Pollard is almost averaging in the double-digit range with 9.4 points per game and 4.4 rebounds.
However, in conference play, Bonton is actually leading the team in scoring with 16.6 points per game to go with his 5.1 assists average compared to Elleby, who is averaging 16.3 points and 7.9 rebounds. Daron Henson is the third and final player averaging in double-figures for WSU in Pac-12 play, posting 12.5 points per game in his two games during league play – including 13 points at Colorado on 5-of-9 shooting.
Under the direction of new head coach Kyle Smith, the Cougars have shown great improvement, having already passed last year's win total. WSU opened the year with a dominant win over in-state foe Seattle U before winning six-straight games. A split of the LA schools was made possible by an overtime win against UCLA before sweeping the Oregon schools at home last weekend.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah's young team had a gutsy performance Thursday night in its 67-66 comeback victory over Washington at home. Freshman
Rylan Jones, who scored all 13 of his points in the final 5:25 minutes of action, orchestrated the thrilling comeback Thursday night. Of his 13 points, nine came at the free-throw line – including the go-ahead free throw that gave Utah the eventual victory with 14 seconds remaining in the game.
As clutch as Jones was down the stretch for the Utes, it was the play of
Riley Battin that kept the Utah within striking distance. The sophomore hit a pair of critical 3-pointers in the first half that allowed the U to be within 28-24 of the Huskies before ultimately sealing the game for Utah when he drew a charge on Washington's final possession of the game with 0.8 ticks left on the clock.
UP NEXT
Utah hits the road once again, this time to the City of Angels where it'll face off against USC (Jan. 30) before battling UCLA (Feb. 2). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (MT) between the Utes and Trojans while the game at Pauley Pavilion against the Bruins will begin at 1 p.m. (MT). Joe Davis and Steve Lavin are on the call for the first game while Alex Faust and Steven Lavin will guide fans through the game on Super Bowl Sunday. Both games are set to air on FS1.
LOOKING AHEAD
The alternating schedule has Utah returning home after its trip to the LA schools and playing host to Stanford (Feb. 6) and California (Feb. 8) on the Pac-12 Network. Thursday's game against the Cardinal will have a late start and trip off at 8 p.m. (MT) – the first #Pac12AfterDark game this season for the Utes. Saturday's contest between the Utes and Golden Bears will then tip-off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8.
