Utah Struggles In Second Half, Falls 24-21 At Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. – In what started as a first half rout for the Utah Football team against Washington on Saturday night, ended with a 24-point swing for the Huskies as they walked away with a 24-21 victory in Husky Stadium.
The Utes scored 21 unanswered points in the first half, the largest first half deficit for the Huskies since 2015, but Washington would counter with 24 points of its own that included 17 points in the third quarter to clinch the three-point win.
Through the first half, Utah held Washington to just 127 yards of total offense while forcing two interceptions with the Huskies converting on zero third downs (0-6). In the third quarter though, Washington would hold Utah to just four first downs while forcing two turnovers, also producing 134 yards of total offense with two touchdowns and a field goal to make it 21-17 to end quarter.
Washington regained possession with under five minutes to play in the game, driving down field 88 yards to score and take the lead for the first time in the game, giving the Utes one final chance with less than a minute remaining.
The Utes would throw an interception on a third-and-five from their own 35-yard line on their final drive of the game with Washington running out the remainder of the clock for the win.
GAME LEADERS
True freshman Ty Jordan was outstanding for the Utes in his first collegiate start, rushing for 97 yards on 10 carries, averaging 9.7 yards per carry. Junior Devin Brumfield added 10 carries for 39 yards and a two-yard rushing touchdown. Â
Senior Jake Bentley was 16-of-23 passing (2 INT) for 144 yards and one touchdown. He also had 10 carries for 33 yards and a seven-yard rushing score.
Junior Bryan Thompson was Utah's leading receiver in yards with 65 on three catches, averaging 21.7 yards per catch with a 13-yard receiving touchdown. Jordan and junior Brant Kuithe (4 rec., 23 yds) tied for the team lead in receptions against the Huskies with Jordan racking up 31 receiving yards for 128 all-purpose yards.
On defense, junior Devin Lloyd led the Utes in total tackles for the second-straight game, finishing with a career-high tying 11 (1.0 TFL). Freshman Nate Ritchie and junior Nephi Sewell both came away with seven each while freshmen Faybian Marks and Zemaiah Vaughn, and senior Vonte Davis all recorded their first interceptions as Utes.
STANDOUT STAT
The Utes had a combined 119 interception return yards against Washington, the most since Utah had two interceptions for 127 return yards against San Diego State on Nov. 1, 2008. It was also the first time since the Utes joined the Pac-12 that two true freshmen have recorded an interception in the same game.
NOTABLE
Utah is set to return to Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 5 when they host the Oregon State Beavers. The game time and TV selection will be announced at a different time.

- Bentley rushed for a seven-yard touchdown in the first quarter giving him nine-career rushing touchdowns (8 at South Carolina). It was his first since he scored a one-yard rushing touchdown against Florida on Nov. 10, 2018.
- Bentley threw his second touchdown of the season in the second quarter, linking up with Bryan Thompson for 13 yards. He has 57 career passing touchdowns (55 at South Carolina, 2 at Utah).
- Ty Jordan rushed for 97 yards against Washington, the most a freshman has run for since Zack Moss put up 95 against San Jose State on Sept. 17, 2016.
- Thompson has averaged 20+ yards per catch in both games this season and in six career games.
- Utah had two true freshmen (Faybian Marks, Zemaiah Vaughn) record interceptions in the game. The last time a Utah freshman had an interception was against Idaho State in 2019 when JaTravis Broughton came away with his first collegiate pick.
