SALT LAKE CITY – Back in the spring, the Utah Ski Team was competing at the NCAA Championship when the entire world came to a stop because of Covid-19.
The Utes were in first place when the championship was halted immediately after the second day.
"When our championship was canceled in the spring that was a huge bummer and that's just the way it goes,"
Samuel Hendry said. "There have been a lot more cancellations since then and it's something we've had to get used to. Having that first blow during the championship was tough because of quarantine. Since we haven't had as much going on as we normally would, we've been able to train super well this summer."
With those unprecedented times, it brought back a sense of normalcy when the team came back to campus to start working out this fall.
"I went back to Norway in March when Covid happened and that was a long time to be home,"
Karianne Moe said. "I was at home for five or six months just training at home kind of alone. Getting back here and training regularly with the team and having that schedule working towards a goal together has been really good. It's easier to be motivated and keep going that way. Also, with school being mostly online, you've missed that aspect of college, so it's been good that training has been as normal as it can be and we can do that together."
The team has been working all fall to prepare for races that will start in early January. Being back together, they've got some really good training in.
"Coming back to the school and having a safe environment for the team, it's been so nice and motivating having all our teammates out there pushing us," Hendry said. "To feel like we have a community again has made a big difference and been super fun."
The team went up to West Yellowstone for some time trials last week and had some good performances.
Novie McCabe had a strong first showing for Utah, but everyone had good performances overall. On the men's side, Hendry had a couple good days racing as well leading the Utes on the men's side. For how the others finished, fans can read

After that training session and now going home for the holidays, everyone is excited to get back and begin the races in January.
"We were just in camp for nine days," Moe said. "Got a lot of training and great skiing in. Lots of volume so I'm a little tired right now. It'll be nice to take a couple days easy after that. I'm excited to get back in January and race. That's what I'm looking forward to now!"
"Words can't express how excited I am to start racing," Hendry said. "It's been such a big break and especially with our season being cut off early, I can't wait to get going again. Those time trials at West Yellowstone were tough because they were like races but were more like teases that got us excited without having the real deal. There weren't as many college skiers there as there will be when we start in January. That was a good preview and I think we're all more excited than ever to get racing again."
