SALT LAKE CITY – Senior
Jimmy Perkins scored four goals to lead the Utah lacrosse team in a 16-10 win over Bellarmine to open the 2020 season.
Utah led 10-4 at halftime and although the Utes surrendered three goals to start the third quarter to the Knights to cut the lead to 10-7, back-to-back goals over a 34 second period from
Josh Stout and
Reuben Santana put Utah back ahead by nine en-route to the victory.
In addition to Perkins' four goals, senior transfer
Colin Burke led Utah with six total points, two goals and four assists.
Josh Stout had four points with two goals and two assists while
Branden Wilson also had two goals. Goals were scored by 10 different Utah players.
Freshman
Cole Brams went 15-of-27 in faceoffs with nine ground balls in addition to an assist.
Samuel Cambere had two caused turnovers and four ground balls with an assist.
Nick Hapney scored a goal and had two caused turnovers while
Josh Rose had three ground balls.
"I thought the team performed well," head coach
Brian Holman said. "It's good to get a win – what a difference a year makes. This has been a really good team to coach. They are engaged and energetic. I think we played our style of lacrosse, which is something that we're proud of – more in transition and pushing the ball. For the most part they executed the details that we asked them to execute and played with a lot of passion."
The Utes return to the field on Saturday, Feb. 8., at Lehigh at 11:00 a.m. MT.
