SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah lacrosse team hits the road this weekend to face preseason ranked Lehigh on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 11:00 a.m. MT.
Utah is 1-0 after defeating Bellarmine last weekend, 16-10. Lehigh will be playing its season opener. The Mountain Hawks are ranked 20th in the USILA preseason coaches poll and 19th in the Inside Lacrosse preseason media poll.
"It's a new week. Lehigh is a really good opponent," head coach Brian Holman said. "It's going to be a huge challenge for us. I want to see how we handle being on the road for the first time. We're still young, so it's going to be a new experience for many of our guys. Lehigh is a tough, physical, gritty team. They're going to be excited for their first game so this has challenge written all over it, which is what we've been telling the guys. Part of this program is that we relish those challenges. We're going to have to play really hard, probably more of a complete game, but we're looking forward to it. I have so much respect for Lehigh and Coach Cassese."
Notes on the Utes
- Senior attack Jimmy Perkins led Utah against Bellarmine with four goals. A transfer from Robert Morris, Perkins is in his second season at Utah and tied for second on the team with 24 goals last year (31 points).
- Senior graduate transfer Colin Burke led Utah vs. Bellarmine with six points. He scored 144 points (89 goals, 55 assists) over three seasons at Fairfield (2016-18) and was the 2016 CAA Co-Player of the Year.
- Junior Josh Stout had four points vs. Bellarmine (2G, 2A). Stout led Utah last year with 43 goals and finished second on the team with 48 points, recording five assists. His 2.87 goals per game ranked 22nd in the NCAA.
- Senior James Sexton had a goal and two assists vs. Bellarmine. He scored a team-high 49 points and 25 assists last year, finishing second on the team with 24 goals. His 13 points vs. Detroit Mercy ranks tied for seventh all-time for most points in a game in the NCAA record book and was the most points in a game by a player in the NCAA in 2019.
- Sophomore Branden Wilson also scored two goals in the opener, he finished third on the team with nine assists last year and also had seven goals for 16 points.
- Utah saw 10 different players score goals against Bellarmine, including senior Aaron Fjeldsted, sophomores Ruben Santana, Nick Hapney and Jack Barron and freshman Mac Costin.
- Sophomores Nick Hapney and Samuel Cambere led Utah with two caused turnovers each vs. Bellarmine. Cambere, who led Utah with 20 caused turnovers last year, also had four ground balls. Hapney was third on the team last year with 11 caused turnovers.
- Hapney, senior Dan Tracy and junior Seth Neeleman started at defense for Utah against Bellarmine. Neeleman had two ground balls in the opener and led Utah with 54 ground balls last season.
- Freshman Cole Brams took 27 of 29 faceoffs in the opener, going 15-of-27. He led Utah with nine ground balls against Bellarmine. Brams is a 2019 U.S. Lacrosse All-American out of Portsmouth, N.H.
- Junior Liam Donnelly played the majority of the game in goal against Bellarmine, making nine saves. His 11.86 saves per game ranked 24th in the NCAA (166 total saves) last season. Sophomore Zack Johns also saw time in the opener, specifically in man-up situations.
- Team captains for the season are junior goalie Liam Donnelly, senior midfield Aaron Fjeldsted, junior defense Seth Neeleman, senior attack Jimmy Perkins and junior attack Josh Stout.
- Utah had a 3.318 team grade point average in Fall 2019 with 75-percent of the team earning a 3.0 grade point average.
- Utah's student-athletes come from 15 different states and Canada (1).
- Utah returns 21 players from last year's team. Of Utah's 41-man roster, 33 are underclassmen (17 sophomores, 16 freshmen).
- Seven players competed for Utah's club program before the team was elevated to DI status beginning in 2019 (Aaron Fjeldsted, Steele Headden, Zack Johns, Rylan Lemons, Seth Neeleman, Jonathan Rose, Josh Stout).

Holman was pleased with many of the things that he saw from the Utes in their opening game.
"I liked the energy we play with, I liked a lot of the things we built the program on," Holman said. "We talked about the toughness and the ground balls and the grittiness and the transition. We did a lot of those things really well. There's some schematic things that we need to tighten up on, which is what we're working on this week. The pillar of our program that we exuded more than anything was the passion we played with, which is expected out of our program. The film looked like the game looked like – we were in control for the most part and we didn't make a lot of mistakes. We had close to 40 possessions on offense, so that's a really good number statistically. We were taking care of the ball and making the right decisions. Credit to the players and staff, they did a great job on Saturday. But that's over and we have to move on. Can we replicate that and continue to get better? That's what every coach wants to see. This is a different style of opponent, Lehigh is probably going to be more physical than Bellarmine."
Utah had the highest attendance of all Division I lacrosse teams that played during the opening weekend with 2,627 fans in attendance.
