Baseball's Rally Comes Up Short at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Utah baseball mounted a furious rally, but it came up short in the rubber match against UC Davis falling 6-5 on Sunday, February 16.
After finding themselves in a 6-0 hole after three innings, freshman Josh Giffins came in and pitched 5.0 shutout innings allowing Utah to get back into it.
Needing to get something going, Shea Kramer singled to start the sixth inning. With two outs, Chase Fernlund got a single to score Kramer from second to get Utah on the board. In his first career start, Brock Rudy stepped up to the plate and belted his first career home run to cut the Aggies lead in half.
In the seventh inning, Utah had some more two-out magic, coming up with three hits to score two more runs. It started out with a Jayden Kiernan double, followed by a Kramer single to score Kiernan. Then Isaac Deveaux got a double to score Kramer from first to make the score 6-5, UC Davis.
Over the final two innings, the Utes couldn't get anything going like in the sixth and the seventh as UC Davis only allowed one more base runner securing the victory.
Kramer had a great opening weekend totaling eight hits and seven RBI. Kiernan also had a successful weekend at the plate with eight hits.
Giffins pitched well once again in his second outing of the weekend. In 5.0 innings pitched, he only allowed two hits.
Utah will play their fourth day in a row as they take on Saint Mary's tomorrow. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
