FIRST PITCH
Utah begins its 2020 season at UC Davis. The two teams squared off last year in the final series of the year and Utah took both games with one game being canceled.
The Utes will look to get off to a good start. The last time they won their season opener was in 2015.
After the weekend series with UC Davis, they will stay in California and take on Saint Mary's on Monday, February 17 at 3 p.m.
HENDERSON JOINS THE UTES
Gary Henderson was hired in the offseason as the associate head coach and will work with the pitchers.
A seasoned veteran and one of the top pitching minds in the country, Henderson has 30 years of coaching experience at the University of Florida, Oregon State, University of Kentucky and Mississippi State.
Henderson reached 200 wins faster than any head coach in Kentucky history. In his tenure with the Wildcats, 72 players were picked in the MLB Draft or signed as free agents.
Well known for his ability to produce Major League talent on the mound, eight of Henderson's pitching protégés have reached the Majors since 2012, which is tops in the SEC.
KELLY RETURNS
Redshirt sophomore
Justin Kelly returns after sitting out the 2019 season with an elbow injury. Kelly will start the season as a starter and will add depth to the Utes rotation.
In his freshman season, he appeared in 12 games out of the bullpen and held a 6.66 ERA. In 24.1 innings pitched, he had 23 strikeouts.
18TH RANKED RECRUITING CLASS
After having four signees drafted that will be on the team for the 2020 season, Utah baseball's latest recruiting class was ranked 18th in the country by Collegiate Baseball.
That is the third best class in the Pac-12.
Only athletes who came to school this fall are factored in as points are awarded to drafted players and the round they were chosen, All-Americans, All-State selections and All-Conference picks.
HEAVY ROAD SCHEDULE EARLY
Utah plays its first 16 games on the road this season before facing Utah Valley on March 17.
The weekend after opening at home, the Utes will host Nevada for their first home series.
In all, Utah has 21 home games this season.
VERSATILITY ACROSS THE INFIELD
Utah comes into the season with three players on its infield being able to play multiple positions.
Chase Fernlund played every spot in the infield in 2019 and will look to lock down a starting spot at second to start the season this year.
Shea Kramer is another ultimate utility player being able to play first, third or either corner outfield spot. Kramer played primarily at first during the 2019 season.
Matt Richardson started mostly at shortstop his freshman and sophomore season, but is getting pushed by
Kayler Yates early on. Richardson can also slide over and play second.
Along with Yates coming in and pushing Richardson,
Braden DeBenedictis and
Trey Clarkson are pushing for some playing time at first base.
SUMMER BALL
Briley Knight enters his sophomore season with high expectations after closing his freshman year strong and then having a great summer in the West Coast League.
Knight was named the MVP of the league after leading the league in several offensive categories including on base percentage (.460), slugging percentage (.621), total bases (113) and extra base hits (29); and finished second in the league in hitting (.357) and RBIs (42) while blasting 8 home runs.
Knight wasn't the only Ute to have a great summer with the Corvallis Knights. Rising sophomore pitcher
David Watson was also honored, being named to the all-WCL second team. He tossed 47 innings, struck out 45 batters and posted a 5-1 mark with a 4.02 ERA.
ROBENIOL RECEIVES MEDICAL HARDSHIP WAIVER
Kyle Robeniol received approval for his medical hardship waiver allowing him to regain one more season of competition in a Utah uniform.
He was Utah's Friday starter for the start of the 2019 season before hurting his knee against Oregon State.
Robeniol held a 4.91 ERA in his eight appearances in 2019. The left-handed pitcher struck out 27 batters while only walking 12 in 36.1 innings pitched. He pitched at least 6.0 innings in three of his seven starts.
