DAVIS, Calif. – Utah baseball dropped its opening game of the 2020 season against UC Davis 6-4 in Davis, California.
Justin Kelly took the mound on opening night after sitting out the 2019 season with an injury and gave up two runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings.
Jayden Kiernan and
Zack Moeller led the way on offense each having multiple hits. Kiernan went 3-5 with one RBI and Moeller went 2-3 with one RBI. They each scored a run as well.
Both teams were scoreless until the sixth when Utah pushed three across the plate. After a Kiernan single and
Isaac Deveaux drew a walk, Moeller doubled down the left field line to score Kiernan. Then with runners on second and third,
Rykker Tom singled to score Moeller followed by
Chase Fernlund singling to score Moeller.
UC Davis started to chip away at the Utes lead in the bottom half of the sixth scoring two runs, but Utah got out of the inning still up by one.
Utah held onto that lead until the bottom of the eighth when the Aggies got a leadoff double. They would go on to score four runs and go up 6-3 heading to the ninth.
The Utes tried to rally and scored one run, but UC Davis held on to take the opening game of the season 6-4.
Kayler Yates earned his first career start at short stop and went 1-4 on the day.
Josh Giffins also got his first appearance in a Utah uniform and forced the Aggies to ground out into a double play to end the eighth inning.
In all, Utah had 10 hits in the game.
Utah and UC Davis will play the second game of the series on Saturday, February 15 at 2 p.m. MT.
