SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's basketball team put together a strong second half offensively against the California Golden Bears, but a slow start to the game on both ends of the court was too much to overcome with the Utes falling 88-74. Utah is 12-13 overall and 5-9 in Pac-12 play.
The Utes trailed by as many as 16 points late in the second quarter, but would come out of halftime to go on a 19-7 run in the third. Sophomore
Dru Gylten tied the game with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter on a great take in the lane but Cal would immediately trade baskets with the Utes to go back up by one with under three minutes to go in the period.
Freshman
Brynna Maxwell hit a pivotal three-pointer just seconds later to put the lead back in the Utes' hands for the first time since the first quarter, but Cal would answer once again as the back-and-forth scoring continued. Utah held a one-point lead with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter, but the Bears would score five unanswered points in the final minutes to take a four-point lead into the fourth.
Cal would go on to hold the Utes to just three field goals in the fourth quarter with Utah unable to close the gap, only shooting 17-percent from the floor and 12-percent from the three in the final period. Utah finished the game shooting 35-percent from the floor overall and 31-percent from the three.
