SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah lacrosse team continues at home this weekend, hosting Furman on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 12:00 p.m. at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The Utes are 1-2 on the season with both losses coming to top-20 teams, 19
th-ranked Lehigh and 17
th-ranked Air Force. Utah was competitive in both games, including coming within a goal of tying Air Force in the final two minutes.
"We've played two top-20 teams and competed against both of them to varying degrees but lost both games, so what do we take away from that?" head coach
Brian Holman said. "That's what we did as a staff this weekend, that's what we asked the guys to do, is look at the things that we did well that are allowing us to play at that level, but stripping that away, what are the things that are prohibiting us from winning those games, then taking those areas where we're not doing very well – and both games had specific areas where we didn't do well – and building them deeper into our practice plans and sharpening them up, and continuing to elevate the things that are allowing us to be in those games. It's a process. We're proud of the fact that we can compete with a top-20 program. We're not happy, because we didn't win. We're lacking consistency. I believe everything can be cured through practice, but I think consistency is one thing that is really relevant to practice. Our goal is to work harder at being more diligent at putting forth maximum effort for longer periods of time in practice. We're going to keep pushing forward."
Furman is 1-2 on the season with a win over Hampton and losses to Bucknell and Navy. The Utes defeated Furman in South Carolina last season, 8-7.
Samuel Cambere is tied for fifth in Division I with seven caused turnovers.
Jimmy Perkins is tied for fifth in the NCAA with 10 goals.
Colin Burke's 13 points (5G, 8A) is tied for 13
th nationally while his eight assists is tied for seventh.
The Utes are ranked second nationally in total attendance (5,122) behind lacrosse power Syracuse, and rank third nationally in average attendance (2,561).
"I'm pumped up about the fan support," Holman said. "We're grateful and proud that we have over 2,500 people come out and see us play. Looking up into the stands in the fourth quarter on Saturday and seeing people on their feet was incredible. Their support is going to help us get there. We have had recruits out who are shocked at the passion and seeing how much fun our fans are having at the games. The fans are as much a part of the program as anyone else. We appreciate them and can't say thank you enough."
