Baseball Edges A&M Corpus Christi in Extras

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Chase Fernlund came up clutch in the 11th inning to give Utah a 2-1 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a pitching duel on Friday night at Whataburger Field.
In the top of the 11th inning, Fernlund was up to bat with runners on first and second with two outs. On a 3-1 count, he hit a single to right center to score Noah Burgarello to give Utah their first lead of the night.
Texas A&M Corpus Christi got a leadoff single to start the bottom of the 11th, but Dustyn Schramm didn't give up anything else to give the Utes the win. Schramm pitched 4.0 innings and only allowed two hits.
The pitching was strong all night for Utah. Justin Kelly got the start and only allowed one run in 6.0 innings.
The Islanders scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Utah answered a couple innings later. In the top of the sixth, they loaded the bases and got one run across when Brock Rudy drew a bases-loaded walk.
From there, neither team got much going until the 10th. TAMUCC got two on base, but Schramm got them to fly out to right field ending the threat.
Moving on to the 11th, Zack Moeller started the inning with a single. Burgarello came in to pinch run for Moeller and advanced to second after a single from Rykker Tom. After a pitching change, Fernlund stepped up to get the hit Utah was looking for.
Tom finished the game going 3-4 on the night. It's his second game in a row with multiple hits.
Sean Bolin came on to pitch the seventh for Utah after Kelly went strong for six innings. Bolin pitched for one inning and had three strikeouts.
The three Utah pitchers combined to only give up seven hits.
The Utes will be back on the field tomorrow to take on the Missouri Tigers at 1 p.m. in the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
