SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah lacrosse team concludes its spring break trip facing 12th-ranked UMass in Amherst, Mass., on Friday, March 13, at 3:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. MT.
*This game was previously scheduled to be played on Saturday, March 14, in Long Island.
It's spring break on campus so the Utes are spending the week back east, which has included tours of Gettysburg, a workout at Under Armour headquarters, and practice at assistant coach
Marcus Holman's high school alma mater Gilman School.
"Visiting Gettysburg helped put things in perspective after the Mount St. Mary's loss," head coach
Brian Holman said. "Ninety-percent of our guys had never been there and it was a good educational experience, understanding the ramifications that battle had on our country. Under Armour treated us great. They had a big presentation for us and we had a chance to work out in their gym right on the waterfront in Baltimore. Practice has been good and we'll head up to Long Island on Wednesday."
The Utes are 3-3 following a tough overtime loss to Mount St. Mary's.
"I hate to sound like a broken record, but we need to play better and it comes back to consistency," Holman said. "We can't have one good quarter and then one really bad quarter. We have worked a lot on cleaning up mental mistakes in practice. We need to have more leadership on the field and have guys recognize how to handle different situations depending on where we are in the game. Iron sharpens iron, and we have to find our edge for four quarters."
UMass is ranked 12
th in the Inside Lacrosse poll and 17
th in the coaches poll. The Minutemen are 4-2 overall on the season, which includes a victory over then-No. 1 Yale. UMass plays Long Island University on Tuesday before facing the Utes.
UMass is assistant coach
Will Manny's alma mater, where he was a first-team All-American and finalist for the 2012 Tewaarton Trophy as a junior.
Dan Tracy is a transfer from UMass (2017-18).
"This is the biggest challenge we have faced so far this year," Holman said. "They are a great program and a tough, hard-nosed, disciplined lacrosse team. They pride themselves on doing the little things right and we're going to have to match that. That it's Coach Manny's alma mater also adds a spark to the flame."
The Utes have four players from New York: Tracy (Bedford),
James Sexton (Niskayuna),
Liam Donnelly (Yorktown) and
Colin Burke (Lloyd Harbor).
