INDIANAPOLIS – Utah's athletics programs performed among the best in the nation in the both the single- and multi-year Academic Progress Report (APR) released today by the NCAA for Division I schools. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation of all student-athletes on scholarship, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Three of the Utes' sport programs—gymnastics, volleyball and men's tennis—earned perfect multi-year marks. Last week those three programs, along with football, received public recognition from the NCAA for posting a multi-year APR in the top 10 percent nationally of all athletic teams in their particular sport. This matched Utah's previous best with four programs earning that distinction in 2014-15.
Utah lacrosse, men's tennis, gymnastics, women's skiing, soccer, track & field and volleyball all matched or surpassed their previous bests for a multi-year score.
Â
"I am very proud of the academic performance of all of our sport programs and the emphasis our coaches place on our students graduating," said
Mark Harlan, Director of Athletics. "Our students are dedicated in the classroom, just as they are in their athletic pursuits, and work extremely hard to achieve excellence. I'm also appreciative of the tremendous staff who support our student-athletes and our campus partners who share in this success."
Â
Utah had 11 sports (men's and women's skiing, men's tennis, women's basketball, cross country, gymnastics, softball, soccer, women's swim, track & field and volleyball) with perfect single-year APR scores of 1000.
Â
The volleyball team earned a perfect single-year APR score for the seventh consecutive year and perfect multi-year score for a fourth straight season.
Â
Gymnastics received a perfect score for the sixth straight season and 11
th overall. Men's tennis, which earned a fifth-straight perfect mark, leads all Utah teams, with a 1000 on 12 occasions. Since the inception of the APP in 2003, 18 different teams have earned perfect scores.
Â
Twelve teams (lacrosse, men's and women's skiing, men's tennis, women's basketball, cross country, gymnastics, softball, soccer, women's swim, track & field and volleyball) tied or set new benchmarks for single-year scores.
The football team posted a single-year APR of 991, the second-highest mark in the Pac-12. This is the ninth-straight year that the football team has been in the top third of the Pac-12 Conference.
