SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah football program will be well represented during the NFL’s preseason camps as 30 former Utes are set to report to their respective teams, with camps slated to begin over the next week.
Rookies are expected to report to camp today with the Utes sending 12 newcomers to the league this year, which includes seven draftees and five who signed free agent deals or were invited to rookie camps. Utah’s seven players drafted in 2020 was the second-most in school history after a program-record eight players were taken in 2017.

It’s not where the kid is right now coming out of high school, it is where can he be in two or three years and that’s really the essence of recruiting at least for us.

Utah’s seven 2020 draftees also led the Pac-12 and tied for fifth-most in the country with six of the seven players drafted coming from the defensive side of the ball.
Entering the 2020 draft, Utah had 95 draftees during the modern era since 1970 and with Utah’s seven in 2020, it brings the total to 102 with head coach Kyle Whittingham being at the helm for 52 of those drafted.
The Utes have had 12 total players drafted in the last two years and 21 in the last four, which is the most in school history in a two-year and four-year period. Utah's 21 draft picks in the past four years are also the most in the Pac-12 with Washington coming in second with 20.
I believe we’re a hard-working, blue collar program — very disciplined, very structured and when guys in the NFL get guys from our program there’s very little issues,” said Whittingham, who also included accountability. “I don’t want to sit here and toot our own horn but we feel like we run a very tight ship and guys learn a lot of life lessons while they’re here — work ethic, responsibility — just so many things.
