SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Alpine and Nordic teams were busy over the holidays competing in races and continuing to prepare for their season beginning soon.
The alpine team competed in Jackson, Wyoming at Snow King Mountain right before Christmas and had nice results.
On the men's side
Wilhelm Normannseth,
Gustav Vøllo all had podium finishes in the races
Bjorn Brudevoll.
Normannseth and Vøllo each earned a pair of podium finishes as Normannseth got first in race 4 as well as third in race 1. Vøllo was third in race 2 and race 3. Brudevoll earned his podium finish by getting in second place.
On the women's side,
Katie Vesterstein finished third in race 4.
This series allowed the student-athletes to get back in the start gate and work through those race day jitters, which was great prep for the races that are quickly approaching in early January.
On the Nordic side, they raced close to home at Soldier Hollow. On the first day, the Utes had five skiers finish in the top 16 in the 1.3 km race.
Novie McCabe came in first and
Julia Richter came in third followed by
Sydney Palmer-Leger in eighth,
Abby Jarzin in 13
th and
Mariah Bredal in 16
th.
The race was tight, but McCabe got the job done by just under a second over the second place finisher and Richter.
On the men's side,
Noel Keeffe finished in fifth to round out the first day.
On the second day of racing, Utah had another great day having the top four racers in the 10k. Palmer-Leger took first followed by McCabe, Richter and then Bredal. Jarzin also was in the race and finished in 21
st.
"After the year we have had and the challenges we have overcome, it was great to be at Soldier Hollow racing once again," head Nordic coach
Miles Havlick said. "This weekend was a great confidence builder for our women's team and an indication of the diligent training we have collectively logged this fall. It was an outstanding battle between Sydney, Novie and Julia today and just incredible to see them sweep the podium! I am looking forward to the remainder of the team returning from holiday this week and getting dialed for the first collegiate races coming up in a couple weeks!"
Now, both teams will begin their season's in the middle of January. The alpine team gets started January 10 and the Nordic team on January 17.
