SALT LAKE CITY – For the first time in the 2022-23 campaign, the University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams will both be competing, as the Utes prepare to host the UNLV Rebels in a dual meet that will take place on Friday at 4 p.m. inside the Ute Natatorium.
UNLV's season to this point has consisted of a pair of double dual meets, the first one occurring on Oct. 21, when they hosted Denver and the University of Toronto, followed a day later by a home date which again included Denver, as well as California Baptist. Their women's squad emerged from those competitions with a 3-1 record, while the men are 2-2. Friday's contest will be their first road test of the year.
While the Rebels' men's swimming and diving team did defeat the Utes a season ago, the last time both the men and women went head-to-head, it was Utah that came out on top. That meet occurred in Nov. of 2019 and the men won by a score of 186-108, while the final on the women's side was 189-111. The list of stars that day included
Charity Pittard, who won the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley while also contributing to a victory in the 400 medley relay.
Last Time Out
Utah's women's swimming and diving team spent the previous weekend hosting a pair of ranked squads in No. 20 UCLA on Friday and No. 8 USC on Saturday. The list of top performers for the Utes during the weekend included
Kayla Miller,
Summer Stanfield,
Norah Hay and
Holly Waxman.
Utah's first victory against the Bruins was snagged by Miller, who took the top spot in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.90. Soon after, it was Stanfield who found her way into the winner's circle, besting the field in the 200 backstroke by touching in 1:59.05 and she also put together a strong performance in the 200 butterfly to take home second place. One day later, it was Hay who landed atop the leaderboard in the 200 back, clocking in at 1:59.93.
Waxman's excellent start to the season continued during the meet with UCLA, putting up a score of 282.83 on the 1m, good enough to win the event and to give her a third straight NCAA Zone score. Waxman and
Lizzy DeCecco then both posted qualifying marks in the 3m, Waxman recording a mark of 306.38, while DeCecco's effort was good enough to earn her a score of 298.13.
The men's swimming and diving team will be competing for the first time since the squad visited California and Stanford on Oct. 12 and 13. Some of the group's best performances came against the Cardinal, where
Andrei Ungur seized second place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 48.27 and
Jaek Horner grabbed the second spot in the 100 breaststroke at 55.76. Horner also collected a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, reaching the finish in 2:03.80 and
Marko Kovacic posted the second-fastest time in the 500 freestyle at 4:32.34.
On the boards,
Ben Smyth won the 3m against the Golden Bears, while
Luke McDivitt put up the team's top score in the 1m. One day later in Stanford, it was
Jenner Pennock leading the way in the 1m, earning a mark of 289.73 and McDivitt was in top form in the 3m, with a dive that earned him a score of 310.50, followed closely by Smyth's 297.98.

The Utes will head to Austin, Texas for four days of competition at the Texas Diving Invite, which will be held from Nov. 16-19 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
