ATLANTA – Utah Football head coach Kyle Whittingham has been named a finalist for the Dodd Trophy for the second time in his career, given annually to the top coach in college football who embodies the three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
Whittingham, who won the award in 2019, is one of five finalists, representing the Pac-12 among coaches from the AAC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC.
Whittingham is the longest-tenured coach in the Pac-12 and the second-longest tenured head coach at the same school in the FBS. He holds an overall record of 154-73 as the all-time wins leader at Utah, coaching in 353 games as a Ute, which includes 227 as the head coach.
He has led the Utes to back-to-back Pac-12 titles with Utah winning at least a share of the Pac-12 South title four times before divisions were dissolved in 2022. Whittingham, a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, has three national coach of the year recognitions, winning AFCA Coach of the Year and the Bear Bryant Award in 2008 along with his Dodd Trophy win in 2019.
Utah has finished in the final College Football Playoff Top 25 in seven seasons under Whittingham, including the Utes' highest finish in program history in 2022 (No. 8). Utah appeared in every weekly CFP Top 25 for the first three years of the system (2014-16), and have tied for the seventh-most appearances of any school with 41 total.
Against ranked opponents, Whittingham's teams have performed well, recording 21 wins against AP Top 25 programs, which includes seven top-10 victories. Four of those top-10 victories have come in the last two seasons with the Utes beating both Oregon and USC twice in 2021 and 2022 to clinch the Pac-12 Championship.
Finalists for the Dodd Trophy were selected by a panel of previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member. The winner will be announced in Atlanta during bowl week at this year's College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
